We must shed our below-average players and replace them with cheap up-and-coming juniors. With the money left over, we need to buy top-range players. For example, we need to buy 2 top range props and 2 edge forwards so, if Su'A and Sims are gone, we need SOO standard replacements for them, and if this means Ford and Burns must go, and a few lazy props must also go, so be it.Ford hasn’t been too bad last 2 games
havent seen burns for a while
both should stay as we have nothing to replace them and they will. E relatively cheap
better options than more of Sharron and Macca but appears where stuck with them
In the forward pack, I would only keep:
Props
De Belin - prop
F Molo - prop
J Hunt
Coric
and buy two SOO-level props. If Lawrie wants out let him go.
Edge Forwards
M Molo
and buy two SOO-level edge forwards. For me Bird is a center/lock player.
Hooker
Ben Hunt
If possible sign Robson
Forget about signing substandard hookers.
In the halves
Sulivan
Amone
Kyle Flannagan
All young halves who if given a chance will shine.
Centers
Suli
Lomax
Bird
Feagai twins
All is OK in the centers
Wongers
Ravalawa
Feagai
Sloan
Ramsey
Blood some more juniors
Fullback
Ramsey
Sloan
We have a few good juniors coming through.
So it seems to me that if we move some players on, we could have the funds to buy:
Haas and one other SOO prop - 1.4m
Fifita and one other SOO edge forward 1.6m
Flannagan for depth in the halves. - 500k
So there are the target Dragons 3.5m for 5 top players, which will give us the following 17:
1. Ramsey
2. Feigai
3. Suli
4. Lomax
5. Ravalawa
6. Amone
7. Sullivan
8. De Belin
9. Hunt
10. Haas
11. Fifita
12. M Molo
13. Bird
14. Flannagan
15. F Molo
16. New prop
17. New edge forward
On paper a very solid 17. So, how do we find the 3.5m to buy the new players:
1. Sims - 800k
2. Su'A - 650k
3. Lawrie - 450k
4. Burns - 300k
5. McGuire - 400k
6. McCullough - 400k if he retires
7. Burgess - 200k
8. Gosiewski -250k
9. Ford - 200k
10. Kerr - 250k
11. Faamausili - 250k
12. Fuimaono - 300k
Approx 4.25m. Savings after 12 players say goodbye. That is a good cleanout and if we purchase the 5 new recruits and backfill 7 remaining positions in our top 30 which would be available for our promising young juniors to fill. A good cleanout to say the least and maybe we can be on our way to a better future in 2023.
The trick will be to fit the 7 new juniors into 11m worth of salary cap and the only way to do this is to give some established players, including Ben Hunt and our 5 new recruits a cocktail of salary and TPA. In much the same way that clubs like Penrith, Storm, Roosters, Broncos, Eels, and Souths do.
