Revealed: Dragons’ Cameron McInnes sprayed teammates; Ennis slams decision to rest Ben Hunt

The St George Illawarra Dragons players have held crisis talks amid the team’s woeful season, with Cameron McInnes ripping into his teammates after their loss on Friday night.

Coach Paul McGregor has come under increasing fire after the Red V’s mid-season slump which reached crisis point when they were thumped by the Panthers.

And Fox Sports’ reporter James Hooper has revealed that McGregor let McInnes deliver an almighty spray to shock the players into a change.

“He left it to his players,” Hooper told Fox League’s Big League Wrap. “Cameron McInnes came to the fore. He looked all the players in the eye he said boys this is not acceptable

“He’s torn strips off them. It was a heavy bake.”

“Mary being the style of character he is, he was given a two-year extension back in May.

“He’s the coach for the rest of this year, next year and until 2021.

He said to the players we can work together and try and fight our way out or I’m going to get moved on and you blokes will also get moved on, so let’s come together and let’s try and fight our way out of here, that’s the only way to handle this situation.

“But Mary, at the moment, he needs a bulletproof vest, they’re very cut throat with their criticism.

How does Ben Hunt feel?

“There’s a board meeting and these fade-outs over the course of not just this season, it’s last year, the year before. That’s going to be high on the agenda.

“I think Paul McGregor is safe, I know it can be interpreted as a death knell — the full support of the board — but at this point in time, they have got Mary’s back.”

Meanwhile, Michael Ennis has questioned McGregor’s decision to rest Ben Hunt. The halfback sat out the must-win clash with Penith, leaving McGregor open to more criticism.

“I put myself in the Dragons’ dressing room on Friday night and I think to myself as a teammate, I’m really happy for you, you played Origin and you deserved it and it’s great our club has got rep players,” said Ennis.

“But I want to win a competition, and so do the other blokes.

“Now when we need to win seven of eight games, and you’re our halfback, our general, you’re not the utility who comes off the bench.

“You’re the bloke who controls and who orchestrates this whole club … he had to play.

“And for me personally, if the coach says: ‘you weren’t great, I reckon we need to give you a spell’. ‘Coach, no way, we’ve got to win the next seven games. I’ve got to play, I want to play Friday night. Just look after me. I don’t need to train until Thursday. I’ll turn up for the captain's run and the week after … I’ve got to freshen myself up that way. But I’ve got to play’.

“Because other blokes in that dressing room are there and they’ve just brought in the teamsheet and James Maloney’s playing.”

My rant about this is on the sack mary thread (no he doesn't deserve a capital M).

Never management's or coaches fault but the onus is on the players.

I hope each Dragon player does what he can to get through this lost cause season without injury.

I hope each player reflects on what is the real problem. McInnes along with Aitken, Lafai and Latimore, is a Mary golden boy. He does his job according to instructions delivered by Mary and so like the other golden boys, seldom finds himself at odds with Mary.

If you happen to be reading this Camron, a top grade professional coach such as Bennett Hasler or Belamy would have you playing heaps better and possibly up for selection at the highest level.

It was spoken about on fox big league wrap by James Hooper. He also backed Mary completely for some reason and said he is safe with the whole 2 year contract thing all the press are going with after Johnston came out.
Its comedy central at present while we go down the gurgler. News limited probably want us to go so bad, we get relocated, just like the nrl agenda.
Of course other teams and supporters are going to back Mary, takes us out of the occasion then. They know we’ll never get there with this poor excuse for a coach running the show.
You only have to look at our game plan and player management or lack of to understand this guy isn’t up to it. Why can’t the people that matter see this. If players aren’t playing to the best of their ability then give them a stint in the reserves. Most other coaches would do this but not our muppet, he couldn’t promote a young guy who is keen to play because he might look bad by dropping a player that he wanted.

Your talking too much sense. The reason why this keeps on going on without redress is because backroom deals have been done among the Illawarra old boys. Nothing to do with winning or doing well, all about self interest of individuals and their deal that have to be honoured.

Hooper pisses me off all day saying about cut throat supporters as if the criticism has been only about the last 2 games and not the last 6 years with the usual 2nd half year fade outs
Yeh that’s because we are not soft fairy’s like his tigers supporters. As Benji said dragons supporters are demanding. Why should t we be we expect results. Unlike the tigers supporters and Hooper.

I could be wrong but I thought it was McGregor not McInnes

Apologies Mick , I have reread the comment and now realize that it was indeed Mary .
That now raises the question just where will Mary be moved on to - is there another suitor out there in the NRL desperately seeking his services ?

How about someone give Mary a spray for not turning up to watch the Reserve grade team's play every week.
Instead he sends his assistants.
The guy needs to go.

But Johnston said he's working 12 to 14 hours a day...He's probably to busy...

Oh no, please God, we don't want him moved on within the Club. Surely he is not going to be our Director of Coaching.

At least McInnes seems to give a shit, in the way he plays and now apparently getting stuck into the players. He appears to be the only one though. Even James Graham seems to have given up.

Paul McGregor...sucking the life out of good players since 2014.

Any player who has given up already just shows their character even if they don't like the coach. I don't like a lot of boss's I have had either but I can't just bludge all day hoping they will get sacked. Maybe at the end of the season they can mention it in the review and all come together and say they need a change. but if they are quitting now id piss them off. It just shows that when the going gets tough they quit, and not the sort of person you want next to you in the trenches. McInnes is the first bloke id have next to me in the trenches of that I have no doubt, and a very worthy captain.
