Correct! The Bledisloe Cup match didn't sell out, it only got 78,900 (in comparison to a few years ago, when they got 83,400).

haha, wow! only 78,000!

league couldn't even fill the scg with 40,000 people for the rugby league centurial game.

Yeah only 78,000!! The same amount of people that attended one of two Origin game's on a Wednesday night. It also attracted more than twice the Bledisloe tv ratings. I'd bet the ARU would love more than the 23k or so that attended QLD v NSW equivalent in union which was watched by a paltry 200k on Pay TV.

The capacity of the SCG is currently 35,000, so a 40k crowd for the RL test would not have been possible. In case you didn't know, the ground has been under construction for most of the year. Have a look at some of the Swans' crowds this year for an idea.

sorry don't watch afl so wouldn't know...

i said this the other day, your pointing to the fact that the biggest game in league is nsw vs qld. it should be country vs country, that is where the game is falling behind the rest of the world, how are we meant to get the world's richest throwing money at our game when only two states watch it? Rugby, Soccer, have both got international backing which is why they have more money, make league more appealing globally and there will be more money.

Anyone who compares international union to international soccer in the way you have immediately loses credibility...

Thanks though John. Things going well since the soccer job?

No comment on the plants, alfie?

Surely you don't disagree with any of the nominated rah rahs/anti-leaguies?

You know what journalism is all about, don't you Calixte?

Its getting people to read/hear/watch your product.

Sensational journalism that gets people all riled up brings in the dosh.

A headline of: "NRL: Everything is Just Squeaky Clean Thanks!" isn't going to sell papers or get people clicking online is it?

Kicking RL in the fork will always sell more than praising it.

In the Courier Mail last week there was a great article on Darren Lockyer and other NRL players playing with rural aboriginal kids. It was an awesome article and said some great things about the game.

How many threads on LU were started about it?

How many articles were written about it?

Bad press sells. You know it and I know it.

no i wouldn't say i'm putting them on a par but they are both above league when it comes to sponsorship globally and fan base globally.

ARU and ARL/NRL are struggling against the rich european clubs, what league in australia needs to do is somehow tap into that money and the only way possible is making league bigger internationally, i got no idea how to do this and to be honest wouldn't even know where to start, but league has to try something, hopefully the league world cup can start something this year and continue to build from there...

yes there are anti league reporters, there is also anti afl and aru reporters too, except at the moment they are all writing about leagues down fall because at the moment that is what people want to hear, it's a bit of a merri-go-round, soon everyone will get sick of the stories about league as it will get a bit repetitive and they'll move onto afl or union or maybe even the a-league. As Thomas mentioned, bad news is what sells papers...

There actually was a thread on that Lockyer article.

Didn't think you would be far away...

My own personal fan club, lucky me.

So what about the plants in the media. Any comments? They are all as clear as the nose on your face...

Negative League storys = $$$. They cant do it to other sports in Sydney as they do not have the care factor.

Until the actual indicators of the games strength start to be effected in a major way, which hasnt happened yet, nothing will change.

I put this to Ryan Phelan's boss yesterday. I basically said the strategy is this:-

If you bag rugby league in the press, you get all of the following tuning in:-

(a) people who follow RL;
(b) people who don't follow RL but follow AFL, soccer or union, and want to see the boot get put into RL; +
(c) people who want to see a "fight" or "bad news" as you say.

The easiest way to pick up all 3 in this part of the world is to write anti-RL stories. So that is what they do...

Plants, Calixte?

Plants indicate a conspiracy. Do you really think the ARU and AFL sit down with a bunch of their journalists and get them to write bad stuff about the game?

Get real.

Read edwahu's post.

So are they plants or is it normal journalism?

If what you say above is true (and I think it is) then journalists and editors are doing their job.

Nice try, alfie...

No, the journalists do it off their own bat because of their personal biases. This is reinforced by the biases of the persons employing them. As you can see, the list I compiled contains both writers and editors.

Or would you like to point out which of the ones I nominated are not pro-union or anti-RL?

If you were an editor and it was your job to sell papers...which story would you run:

1) a feel good story about some NRL players helping disadvantaged kids

or

2) an article pointing out the problems with the NRL etc

Try and anwer it without your bias turned on.

You are so George W., Thomas.

"You are either with us or the terrorists..."

It is clearly a combination of both:- journalists with personal biases and why the News Ltd machinery operates the way it does.
