The true "hatred" or "rivalry" was the Norths and Manly derbies!

The true rugby league "hate" or rivalry was the North Sydney Bears versus Manly. This Souths and Easts thing is childs play in comparison. Few league games could match the bitter rivalry, skill and outright violence that a Bears and Manly match could produce.

Manly were created out of the Bears, they broke away back in the 40s and took half the club with them, it was acknowledged as a dog of an act then and many still maintain it reflects on what Manly are percieved as now.

This Souths/Easts thing has been dragged out by a couple of yuppies who recently jumped on the Souths bandwagon, most South supporters were oblivious to it..they preferred to smash Manly than Easts.

Now that there are so few genuine rivlaries left in league due to the Super League war and various deaths and mergers and apart from State of Origin, the NRL must promote certain matches and conjure up minor facts to try and create a rivalry.

It does not work for mine and even the players seem lethargic about, to them it is just another match in a season of many others!

I used to go to them with my grand father at north sydney oval. It was a great atmosphere and always had some dust ups.

Imagine the game between them if the Bears were ever brought back on the CC given what happened with the Northern Eagles. A marketers dream..

Manly v Norths always was the biggest til the merge tbh.

Bulldogs and Eels has always been pretty fierce but this time around not so much... overshadowed by a revival of this Roosters/Rabbits thing.

Some funny old footage there, that Kevin Roberts was a bastard I recall, but most coppers back in that day were.

Yeah, you'd think the NRL would do something about that now wouldn't you?

I wouldn't say it was the fiercest, maybe the longest, certainly Parra v Cant in the 80's, Wests v Manly in the 70's, Balmain v Souths, Saints v Souths, Parra v Wests in the 70's and 80's would be pretty fierce.

Attending with them were officials from North Sydney who were supporting Manly's request. Norths selflessly put forward Manly's bid, even though its inclusion would see them lose a large number of players from all grades with the immediate application of the residential rule. But Norths took the view that the distance many players, officials and supporters were forced to travel to be part of the Bears meant that the expansion of rugby league was suffering.

Another example of norths acting selflessly for the good of the greater game, much like our move to the central coast, and getting f**k all in return from the governing bodies.

And yes, great rivalry. Wish i was at the game when we smashed manly 41-8 and Flo called the crowds onto the ground at the great oval in australia

Had to savour the few victories you had I guess. I do not recall Norths getting many, was great as a good mate was a mad Norths fan. Wish they would come back, guaranteed 2 points for us.

Good work t-ba. Little bro always had the upper hand.

I really wish the Bears were still around, loved the derbys.

A little part of Manly died when Norths did tbh.

It can't ever be revived, but a CC Bears would be great for Manly. We'd have a proper 'local' rival back.
