last rights does not = must accept last bid offered.

I am pretty sure it does if the offer matches what a rival offers. Hoping that Channel 10 can at least push them hard (though that depends what happens with the AFL rights and if Channel 7 decides to go it alone or not, which I suspect not as they don't want the Saturday night horror ratings).

When shown live (or at least slight delay) games have been shown to get 70-100k in Perth and 4-700k+ in Melbourne (admittedly these are showcase games as that is all we get at a decent time).

I dont' think anyone thinks there isn't an audience for RL outside of NSW and Q'land, questions have to be asked why they arent' being shown. Foxtel perhaps?

but it won't just be about $'s. It will include issues like fixed scheduling, national coverage, cntra value, promotion etc. My understanding is that there is no contractual agreement that the NRL has to accept the Ch9 bid, even if it matches any other bid if they feel they will benefit in other ways from going with a rival bid.

What would be even more interesting would be to challenge it all together given the NRL as an organising company is being disbanded and a new company taking over the reigns, does any prior agreement with the NRL still stand?

Well matching a bid, would include national coverage, though stuff like fixed scheduling could be different as some flexibility would be part of the process, as maybe another bid offers something that another bid counters with an offer to provide something else instead of a similar value to the NRL.

As for the second part, the IC would have to honour any contract that exists. But hopefully what the IC provide is a stronger push to get the game televised into areas live that it isn't already, as well a plan for the games future.

Can;t wait for the IC to be formed, hopefully it means we hear less from Gallop.

Seems Murdoch and Packer are throwing their weight around at 10. Surely the NRL will only increase their viewer numbers
Ten appoints Lachlan Murdoch acting CEO

  • From: AAP
  • February 23, 2011 12:00AM

TEN Network Holdings Ltd shareholder Lachlan Murdoch has been appointed acting chief executive of the television broadcaster, the company says.

Ten chairman Brian Long said board "had given notice to Grant Blackley of the immediate termination of his contract'' as chief executive, Ten said in a statement today.
"At the unanimous request of the board, Lachlan Murdoch has agreed to accept the role of acting chief executive officer during the period that an executive search is undertaken for a new chief executive officer,'' the statement said.
Ten shareholders such as Mr Murdoch, who also sits on the News Corporation board, gaming magnate James Packer and WIN Corp deputy chairman Bruce Gordon have privately and publicly questioned Ten’s news strategy in recent weeks.
Ten has struggled to attract viewers to its expanded news service between 6-7pm.

They are idiots for trying to compete with people that do the news best (7 commercially and the ABC/SBS).

They have something that no-one else can offer, sport. Go, 7mate, 11, 7two GEM etc. are all just have series of TV shows that aren't special. ONE has the chance to attract every red blooded male in Australia.

The smartest thing the NRL can go is get some Storm games on Fridays live in Melbourne this year before & during the TV negotiation - so they have firm numbers that show that primetime NRL in Melbourne > primetime AFL in Sydney/Brisbane.
With the new anti-siphoning rules introducing a requirement that listed events (ie. the three Channel Nein games) must be broadcast within four hours of kickoff, the Melbourne Storm are about to become very valuable to the free to air rights holder.

With two matches played at 7.30pm Friday night the latest the second of those matches could start replaying in Melbourne is 11.30pm. Unless the other game is shown simultaneously on one of their other channels, this would mean the first match has to start showing around 9.30pm. For Sunday afternoon games it's even better with the latest replay starting at 7pm.

These legally imposed time slots are going to make maximising Melbourne ratings for NRL matches suddenly very important to Nein to minimise the loss in advertising revenue. What's the best way to consistently maximise ratings in any market? Show the local team of course. Expect to see the Storm scheduled almost weekly on free to air much like the Broncos as soon as the new rules come into force.

Leigh.

If that is the case we will see the Storm, Broncos/Titans and Dragons most weeks in the 3 games. This is good for the game through the TV deal as these clubs will maximise ratings and give every state a team to watch.

Lets just hope slots become shared around more once the new deal is in place.

Unfortunately, the legal imposition of live or near live games just wont happen outside the heartland.

The only way we are going to get on at a decent time in Melbourne is by negotiated and strict contractual obligation.

CHANNEL 10's new board has sacked the network's chief executive Grant Blackley, replacing him with Lachlan Murdoch.

In a stunning new media play, the company's chairman Brian Long confirmed the "immediate termination" of Mr Blackley's contract following a board meeting today.
The meeting had canvassed the network's financial results for the first half.
Lachlan Murdoch agreed to accept the acting CEO role "at the unanimous request of the Board" while a search for Mr Blackley's replacement is conducted.
Grant Blackley had championed the network's controversial news strategy, which has flailed in the ratings with costs of $20 million.

I thought this was worthy, Lachlan is a huge League fan, will it mean he goes harder for league than VFL?

Lachlan is a huge dickhead. Daddy bought him a comp once because he forgot to get him a train set. Lachlan thought it a good idea to have a second team in Newcastle.

FFS I hope League doesn't go to 10. We just got rid of the Murdoch cancer out of our game.

This time all he will do is throw money at the game and not have any power over it. If he wants to give us lots of money and takes us off the unprofessional channel 9 (and shows game into other state at the same time we get them) then thats great!

it actually means 10 would be less likely, given news' interest in fox sports.

one hd is on borrowed time methinks.

No, as others have said on the TV rights thread :

Ch7 will have a real crack at the majority of the AFL rights & CH10/One HD will go hard for a piece of the NRL pie. ( possibly 1 or 2 games per round & some rep games and / or a small portion of the finals series to begin with )

If you do a bit of a readup of what lachie has been doing recently you're very wrong there. Seems that he wants to step out of his fathers shadow and isn't afraid of taking him on.

Are you suggesting that a civil contract is any more likely to bring about coverage outside the heartlands than *criminal* liability? A broadcasting license is worth an awful lot of money but it's only worth it while you possess it. Networks don't tend to persist in behaviour that puts their license at risk (ie. willfully breaching the broadcasting act). It's one thing to brush off a desperate sports body, it's another thing to ignore the law of the land enforced by a dedicated government authority.

Ch 7 are locked in to bidding with Ch 10 for the AFL rights, not sure if that could work.
