I was talking to my brother-in-law at Channel 9 Melbourne again last night, and he dropped a couple of tidbits
.....

Once again, the caveat, my brother is NOT an executive or a producer and has no inside information, all he hears is the scuttlebutt around the building.

Its funny when I think about it, but I actually spent over an hour last night talking about Better Homes and Gardens.

Thanks very much for the detailed scuttlebutt, but if the information comes from within a tv station, wouldn't it be "inside information". Also, I just wanted to clarify whether the employee is your brother-in-law ( as first mentioned ) or brother as mentioned towards the end. It'll be interesting to see if other media outlets are reading this & we hear about their possible plans based on this scuttlebutt.

He is whinging about the duplicity of News Ltd trumpeting the ARL commission in their papers (making mileage out of the story) and yet manipulating the broadcast media to ensure its rivals don't get a look in for sport broadcast rights and minimising the payout to AFL and NRL.

Murdoch is a slipery slimey evil charicter.

STOP THE PRESSES !!!

Roy Masters has a dig at News Ltd !!!!!!

He married my sister, I just refer to him as my brother

By inside information I meant he is not inside the negotiations and doesen't have anything to do with the research or bid process, its strictly water cooler talk and his opinion.

- Channel 9 are gearing up to pounce on the AFL rights, if 7 and 10 slip up and undervalue their bid, or they can beat them on better telecast details. They believe they can satisfy all the AFLs requirements by putting the games on GO in NSW and QLD and continue to show league on their main channel.

From what I've seen, 7 is offering the same service in terms of 7 2/7 mate.

Remember - 9 needs to not only match 7 but also 10 - so 7 are paying less overall for AFL than what 9 would have to. If 9 were to somehow 'win' the AFL rights, they'd be cutting their NRL leg off. At the moment 7 can financially outmuscle 9 almost 2 to 1. I don't believe 9 would leave themselves open to losing the NRL rights. Everything I've read and heard leads me to believe they want to keep the total NRL package and dip their reserve into the Monday AFL experiment.

9 obviously have a reason to drive up the AFL rights and it wouldn't surprise me if all their bid talk (excluding Monday nights) is simply to force 7 to spend up big.

Worst case if 9 gets the AFL - they won't be able to cover the existing last rights NRL agreement - meaning we can unbundle the games to all 3 networks.

Channel 7, in trying to land league, are going to try to insist on Better Homes and Gardens going before it and FNF going onto delay. I asked him about the second game going until 12:30 and he said he didnt know anything about that. I told him that would make it really unlikely that 7 could mount a competitive bid for league.

We need the 7:30pm to 11:30pm double header to boost our 2 main capitals. That's the beauty of the double header system and why I advocate for its use on Sundays. It's the number one TV advantage we have over the AFL. A 12:30am finish would simply kill the 2nd game.

9 knows this. I've even heard Gallop refer to it at a conference so I'm sure 7 would be aware of it as well.

In my opinion, the best thing we can do on a Friday is to actually start the coverage at 7pm with a 7:10 or 7:15pm kick off to ensure the second game finishes at 11:00pm instead. This in conjunction with simultaneous coverage of both games (one on the main, one of digital with a 9:10pm swap) will boost the 7-9 slot to 1.4 to 1.5 million nationally across the two. Double sell the ad blocks on both channels (of 8 hours over 2 networks instead of 4 on 1) and you've probably got the richest advertising slot of the entire week on any channel.

Of course the only network who would ever be willing to offer that is 10.

Absolutely, I asked point blank about this, and he said the new anti-siphoning laws, which guarantee the second best game of the week is on Saturday night, has changed the game for that slot. He said that 9 were now seriously considering a 4 AFL game package, live in prime-time on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, with a Sunday afternoon game lead in to the news.

He said that a bunch of the AFL execs were very keen on seeing 9 become the AFL broadcaster, and that they were mighty pissed off last time when they were forced to go with 7. The AFL are apparently negotiating with betting agencies for exclusive rights to live odds being shown during games, and it hinges on how many games will go out live on FTA and to which cities, and 7 have so far refused to shift BH+G.

I asked where that left the NRL and he said that their first and last bid guarantees them the advantage in the bidding, and they would definitely make a competitive bid either way, but if they got a full suite of AFL they would be prepared to let the NRL slide for the time being, if as expected OneHD paid a massive amount for the NRL.

And to be honest, that sounds like the ideal circumstance to me. No Nine, just OneHD, and the piles of cash we need to revolutionise the games administration.

cheers, appreciate you sharing this sort of info from inside a media organisation - gives us outsiders some idea of what is going on rather than just hearing the agendas & controlled stories from the 2 opposing newspaper groups

I'd love to see the NRL on ONE HD. It's a perfect fit for that channel. NRL, Nascar, Gridiron and all for free. All that would be missing is the V8s.

Yeah that's what I've heard as well.

I guess it also depends which station your brother works at. There is a real Melbourne vs Sydney mentality at 9 that has affected the networks overall performance. Just petty crap really.

Good point.

I think 7 will concede BH+G in Southern States though if they think 9 is a genuine competitor.

I also think it means that whoever gets the rights will either: show AFL in Syd & Bris live at 3pm-6pm on their digital channel and have crap on their main

-or show live AFL in Syd & Bris 2pm-5pm and on delay in southern states, all on the main.

Whoever gets Sunday AFL will get absolutely smashed if the NRL bring in a Sunday Afternoon Double Header and they will lose Sunday nights for the next 5 years.

I wonder if this OneHD money is coming straight from Packer/Murdoch and if it will be a 10/Foxtel team up for all 8/9 games.

It's definitely not within 10's current bottom line, even if they're freed of the current 2 AFL games.

10/fox team up would be good but kiss goodbye to an FTA Saturday night game.

Just to see the status quo broken up, and the game get a fair go in the Southern States, would be more than enough this time around. Although I don't have foxtel, going to the pub to watch the game (or stream it off the internet) isn't that bad. Channel 10 would treat the sport much better than Channel 9 currently does.

That's true, 10 are the only ones that take full advantage over the digital channel. If the game wasn't being shown into VIC, SA, WA, TAS on its main channel it'll definitely be on its digitial channel.

"gotta love ten" (not seven)

Given the statement given about the treatment of the matty johns show then 7 are not serious about nrl tv rights so this would mean we are in a 2 horse race with 9 vs one hd for the rights.
Will packer and Murdoch put up the money that the nrl want well let's hope so kerry stokes is only interested in AFL, expansion is a must with perth really a must before any other team.

Matty Johns needed the AFL show to work as well remember, with Johns covering NSW & QLD, and the AFL crap down south.

With the AFL show getting a quick chop, keeping TMJ show on air was always going to be an uphill battle.

The Controversy Corner sunday programme actually had legs though, imo.

Doesn't rule out 7 f**king 9 over by upping the price though.

:?

7 axed their AFL show so your theory would mean they are not interested in either
