The value of a 9th game

So with 17 decided and a push for 18 that will only grow louder as everyone gets fed up with the Byes what time slot would a ninth game sit in for Tv value?

Monday night - The most valuable would probably be a Monday night FTA spor. This is fraught with problems though in terms of turn around scheduling and negative impact on club revenues from poor fan attendance

Sunday 6pm - An ideal timeslot for a Perth club to host games as would be an afternoon kick off in Perth meaning large crowds and daytime football. Would it fit with FTA Tv scheduling or best reserved as a new exclusive game for Fox? Downside would mean an East coast club having to play in this family unfriendly slot when Perth not at home.

Saturday 9pm - Possible with Perth home games but impractical for East coast teams to be KO that late when Perth not at home.

So other more out there options:

Multi scheduling - with the advent of streaming it is no longer necessary to have every game in its own unique live slot. It could be feasible to have two games on at same time on Kayo with viewers choice or even multi screen viewing. This would open up the ninth game to effectively be put in any slot that KAyo felt was most valuable

Multi scheduling Saturday night game - One live game on FTA, one live game on PTV, both games simucast on KAYO. Gives NRL the fta Saturday night audience it currently lacks but keeps PTV Saturday exclusiveness for its own game.

NRL driven content - Way out there given Vlandys step back from digital arm but the ninth game could be produced by the NRL and available via its own digital service as a first step into content production and direct to customer sales strategy.

There is no doubt the most value will be in selling the game as a 4th FTA coverage game, will be interesting to see if Ch9 come to the party.

Fox like that early time slot & another team from nz could accommodate that. Warriors complain they stuck in that slot too often so maybe extra helps them not just with derby?!

You mean 6pm Friday? Yes a second NZ team would, though the reluctance of Fox to demand Warriors in that slot would suggest a NZ club might not draw well in it? Still leaves somewhere to find for the ninth game.

That's probably because warriors complained. Extra kiwi team can spread burden. Clearly fox like this slot keeping it around since 2016.

With Perth you could occasionally bring in a proper Saturday with a 9:30 game. And keep it around 6:30 as well for other weekends including day time Perth. Don’t think the broadcasters would be keen on having two games on at a time. Then you could occasionally whack a Monday one on I guess.
so my answer is keep it floating

There ain't gonna be a Perth team anytime soon, no point entertaining the fantasy of having a west coast game time slot.

Sunday games to start at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm
Regardless of where they are played, yes it means 5pm kick could drift into night time, and can work if perth is mostly using it on a unique timezone, but it also means a 1pm kick off can start the sunday games much earlier instead of the waiting between the sunday footy show of FTA up until its general 4pm kick off.
What we should be thinking about is where a 10th game could work, which might end up being a return of monday night.... which will really hurt the 5 day turnarounds

You think clubs have any say? lol raiders have been complaining about lack of fta for Years.
6pm Friday is proving s ratings winner for fox, that why they don’t want warriors in it.

There isnt going to be a ninth game anytime soon either. Maybe by the time we expand again the nrl will have grown a pair.

The value in a 9th game is exclusivity, if they can offer it. That depends on what PVL sold Fox - 8 games, 3 simulcast, 5 exclusive vs ALL games, 5 exclusive etc. If it’s the former then Nine will happily pay for the 18th team to get around the Fox simulcast and get back an exclusive “9th” game each week.

That doesn’t mean four FTA games or a new slot for the exclusive game. If Nine pays the money, they’ll want it either on Thursday night or Sunday 4pm. Thursday games lead off the round and have no other games sharing the spotlight that day. Sunday 4pm gives a direct ratings boost to Sunday nights.

The actual extra game would probably go to Sunday night - so that rounds aren’t dragged out an extra day. Besides, no one wants to go back to Monday nights. As a non exclusive, a Sunday night game would obviously be on Fox but it could also be offered to Ten or Seven as a fourth FTA game.

The devil is in the detail and we don’t know any of it.

Not a matter of that. NRL trying to maximize value of extra team. Dollars got to make sense. We know ur preference but may not be best option for game even long term

They'll be clause outline dollars for additional team.

Yep, thinking more earlier games & an extra kiwi team. Warriors were scheduled for 13 Friday 6pm fixtures at start of 2021 season

My personal preferrence is to start playing games in parrallel between Fox and FTA

Thu 8pm
Fri 8pm

Sat 6pm
Sat 8pm x 2
Sat 10pm (Fox Replay)

Sun 2pm x 2
Sun 4pm x 2
Sun 6pm (Fox Replay)
Sun 8pm (Fox Replay)

This then opens up Fri 6pm, Sat afternoon, Sunday morning for State Cups and NZ Cup games

Chance to experiment with Friday 6pm whenever Warriors get to return home. If the league and clubs are committed to repaying Warriors for their sacrifices, clubs to take a home game to NZ cities, for the 8pm (NZST) slot in 2023.

Warriors to also get 2 home games for that slot, and the rest booked for the early game Saturday/Sunday.

If Perth were to get 18 in the future, It would be best to ensure Perth and Auckland have home games on alternative weeks. Make it 6pm Sunday EST for Perth, and 12pm Sunday EST for Warriors. Two alternating schedules.
