So with 17 decided and a push for 18 that will only grow louder as everyone gets fed up with the Byes what time slot would a ninth game sit in for Tv value?
Monday night - The most valuable would probably be a Monday night FTA spor. This is fraught with problems though in terms of turn around scheduling and negative impact on club revenues from poor fan attendance
Sunday 6pm - An ideal timeslot for a Perth club to host games as would be an afternoon kick off in Perth meaning large crowds and daytime football. Would it fit with FTA Tv scheduling or best reserved as a new exclusive game for Fox? Downside would mean an East coast club having to play in this family unfriendly slot when Perth not at home.
Saturday 9pm - Possible with Perth home games but impractical for East coast teams to be KO that late when Perth not at home.
So other more out there options:
Multi scheduling - with the advent of streaming it is no longer necessary to have every game in its own unique live slot. It could be feasible to have two games on at same time on Kayo with viewers choice or even multi screen viewing. This would open up the ninth game to effectively be put in any slot that KAyo felt was most valuable
Multi scheduling Saturday night game - One live game on FTA, one live game on PTV, both games simucast on KAYO. Gives NRL the fta Saturday night audience it currently lacks but keeps PTV Saturday exclusiveness for its own game.
NRL driven content - Way out there given Vlandys step back from digital arm but the ninth game could be produced by the NRL and available via its own digital service as a first step into content production and direct to customer sales strategy.
There is no doubt the most value will be in selling the game as a 4th FTA coverage game, will be interesting to see if Ch9 come to the party.
