Excerpt from last week's Washup:
Gardner has teriffic awareness, wonderful technique and a high skill level.
  • That try tonight was very Slater like. He had to catch, beat on the outside, have speed and evade. Tough little nugget too - and kicks goals. Is he stitched up?
  • First half was our best 40 minutes since Ando came.
  • Our game continues to evolve. We were the team that turned up and competed as hard as anyone else for a return of 1 or 2 tries a game. This went on for 2 and a half seasons under Sticky. Once he announced he was quitting we are playing football. Real football. Last couple of weeks we tried to score off every tackle, but tonight we were composed and waited until we had good field position and then mixed it up beautifully....
  • ...who's coaching this side?
  • I'll have a guess.... About 3 weeks ago Sticky informed the guys he was leaving and asked them how they'd like to finish the year. The answer was, "Having a real go' instead of the usual tackle, control the ruck and keep your formation in attack routine. He agreed and Barrett and Gallen are having much more say in things and being heard. Just a guess.
  • Rorters opened us up quite a few times tonight but took diabolical options. Could've/should've been closer at the break.
  • Once again our overall peformance level drops when Bluto Cuthbertson enters the fray. He is overweight, unfit and offers nothing. Very poor defensive technique. Manly could bring him off the bench and carry him because of their star studded team. we don't have that luxury and he single handedly allows the Rorters back into the contest as he did the Broncs last week. Watch his work in the defensive line...
  • Smith cannot tackle. At. All.
  • We will be without Gallen next week as he will be one of the first picked for SOO, but fortunately we have the bye. So we can add 4 points to our tally after tonite. Shame our for/against is a car crash.
  • Confidence very high. A fortnite to get over niggles. Then a Sunday arvo at Toyota against the Queens. Bring it on baby...

A pretty good assessment of tonights match and where things stand overall with the side. Just a few points:

We are playing real footy and it is good to watch. There is a different dynamic about the side since Rick made his announcement.

When Luke Douglas and Kade Snowden come from the field, the performance level does drop. Big Sosia is getting better, but we need another front-rower coming off the bench who can maintain the momentum that Douglas and Snowden create.

Our last 2 wins have come against sides who have had to play on a Saturday Night after backing up from a Monday Night game. We have deserved to win both games, but how much of factor did the 'quick turnaround' play in the result?

The Dragons game should give us a measure as to where we are really at in terms of this new style of play

I took alot of heart from the brisbane game even though the result looked terrible, went to the club had a few bers and left alot happier in a long time. Last nights result confirmed it.

the loss to brisbane didn't concern me at all.i thought we were the better team through most of that game but our halfback (and some others)let us down in the finishing department.

last night showed how we can compete if everyone contributes.

go you good things.

Just watched the game as I couldnt make it on Sat nite. And I think we have turned the corner as a football side . Im not saying we will a heap of games this year! But this present side has matured and stepped up a level. Finaly Ricky has got them where he has wanted them , was it Ricky or have the players taken over as some say on here? I dont know but I liked what I saw and I recon the crowds will start to come back and the points will flow. Just watching the side play like that has lifted my spirits like nothing else.

Tim Smith's defensive reads are awful at times, he got beaten all ends up against Pearce for the Graham try..he needs to work on that if we are to keep teams at bay

he needs to be hidden more effectively

the way other small men are hidden is to always have them first up in the rush close to the ruck when in a vulnerable position on the field - their misses dont matter as much there

You preggers?

I'm surprised 73, you seem a pretty smart dude I thought you'd figure it out.
There's been "baking a cake" analogies on here for weeks.
The mixing has been done, it's now being placed in the oven. Time to let it cook for a while

Just watching the game on iq for the first time (gotta love the mrs for that) a couple of comments. Gordon when he missed that tackle in our attacking 20 when at the game I thought it was pretty bad but he slips just as he made the final lunge.
Snowden is a nutcase he smiles when he makes hitups!! He loves the grind I'm sooo impressed with this bloke dead set awesome. We have to lock him in soon!!
Gardner does some dam good things on the field! I really like the way he is developing. He is still a baby which makes me nervous normally but he looks technically solid does the little things well and has good awareness and vision.
