CRONULLA boss Lyall Gorman has tipped a bucket of cold water over Sharks coach Shane Flanagan’s claims that Paul Gallen will retire from Origin after game three.
Flanagan today revealed on a club podcast that Gallen would farewell rep football after the Origin decider at Suncorp on July 8 but that claim quickly became blurry, with reports emerging that Gallen had made no such decision.
Speaking on Triple M’s The Rush Hour just hours after the Sharkcast made waves, Gorman said Flanagan had got carried away, making an announcement he had no right to make.
“No mate, no he’s not correct,” Gorman said. “It’s not the way he really wanted it to come over.
“That Sharkcast is an internal thing and he’s probably a bit more relaxed on that.
“ ... It’s funny with the Shark podcast, I did one a few weeks ago with some Sharks internal people and you’re probably just a bit more relaxed and you put things out there that you might not mean to.
“He’s not announcing Gal’s Origin retirement on that, the call hasn’t been made by Gallen yet.”
Gorman explained that the point Flanagan was really trying to make was that Cronulla would prefer it if Gallen didn’t play Origin next year.
he NSW captain has missed large chunks of the last couple of seasons through injuries suffered in the interstate arena and Gorman confirmed that in Gallen’s “testimonial year” the club captain would be expected to put the Sharks first.
“In a preferred world next year Gallen would have a major major focus on us,” Gorman said.
“In a perfect world Gallen wouldn’t play Origin next year and we’ll have those discussions but they definitely won’t be wrapped up before Origin III.”
Gorman confirmed that contract negotiations were ongoing with Gallen’s management, with a one-year deal for next season expected to be announced soon.
However the Sharks CEO said he’d leave Gallen to focus on the Origin decider, with neither party in a hurry to get the deal done.
“The last thing we want in the lead up to Origin III is for the focus to be on Paul Gallen and his contract negotiations.”
It’s been widely understood that next season would be Gallen’s last in the NRL, however Gorman said he would not be the one to end the Cronulla great’s career saying: “You’d never write someone like Paul Gallen off.
“We’ll just take it one year at a time. I’m not going to make that call for Paul Gallen and the club at this stage.”
