The Worst Place On Earth You've Been To

What place in the world have you visited and couldn't get out of there quick enough?

For me, Surabaya on the east coast of Java in 1981. After travelling from Gilimanuk in West Bali by ferry, I decided to check this shithole out. At the port of Surabaya, I was "greeted" by hundreds of children sitting at the dock begging. Most of them had an arm or leg missing! I lasted there for less than an hour and was lucky to catch the same ferry back.

On the ferry, I asked what I assumed to be a Surabayan local was the hell did I just see. He said that most poor families in the region nominate one child in their family to be the beggar and lop a limb off for effect. Barbaric merkins! I wanted to stay there for a few days. Don't think so!

I just hope they have stopped the practice.

Haven't been there for a while, but Denpasar wass the smelliest city I've ever been to
Wasn’t the smell that bothered me as much as it being overrun by hordes of the most bogan Aussie tourists imaginable and most of the locals being engaged in the business of constantly trying to hustle money out of said bogans by offering them shit souvenirs, timeshare investments or underage sex. Nuke it from orbit.

I've done a bit of travelling in my time, and I'd have to nominate Adelaide as THE dullest place on Earth. I've been there twice, once of which was during the 'best' time of year to be there (Fringe Festival, Comedy Festival, some street circuit racecar race, this, that ... all happening at once), and after the first few hours, I was desperately trying to find ways to kill time for my remaining couple of days there. Instead of catching the train / tram, I would walk between stops just so that it'd take longer to get wherever I was going just to kill the day. I'd walk for an hour to go get lunch, REALLY take my time eating, then walk back so that 'lunch' would take nearly 3hrs, and it'd only be a short time before I got to do the same for dinner.

So Adelaide gets my vote.

Internationally, I didn't find Venice particularly interesting once the tokenism of the canals wore off.

Paris, Auckland? please you don't know what shit is...

Blackpool in England. Just a bleak toilet of a place. Like being in surfers paradise if it was 1967 and the sun was never out and the beach was brown.

This thread isn't valid until we hear from @skeepe and @nick87
Thank you for the opportunity to mention Hunter St and the Promenade

But sadly I’ve been to Dubbo so it takes the prize in the spirit of the thread, and as far as this thread goes under the criteria of “couldn't get out of there quick enough” for entirely different reasons, Dachau also immediately came to mind.

Adelaide is kinda sleepy but it’s quite nice… some good pubs and food places, nice beach, nice scenery etc. so it’s far from the worst place I’ve been. Hell it’s not even the worst place in SA, Whyalla’s got it beat there

Dora Creek and Umina....ugh

Bangkok f**ken sucks too. Any place that's so filthy you can walk past a stack of durian as tall as Shaun "Jeez He's Rangy" Lane and not smell then has some issues
