The worst thing about golden point

Any sense of smart footy goes out the window. It's so frustrating to watch players try and force a field goal

to be fair, based on 1nglis' performance yesterday, it's clear that this problem isn't solely the domain of golden point anymore..

Crokers kick from the sidelines to level it up was more exciting than both teams fumbling for field goals IMO.

I remember we played a game last year that went to golden point and Hodgson at hooker put in a crafty play where he chucked a dummy to where the halfback stood....every parra player bit and he just walked across for a try.

More plays like that if we must have golden point. I can't get over croker trying to kick a goal from 50m out lol

Thats the one I was trying to remember yesterday.

Was so good.

If extra time is absolutely needed, just forget the golden point rule. Make it 10 minutes of high intensity point grubbing with right of reply.

So if you score a field goal, then you've got to defend it. If there's a controversial penalty 20m in front, take it but then defend it - at least refs won't feel as shy. If you score a try, then your chances of winning have gone right up - but you still have to defend it.

Golden point is arse and a bad advertisement for football.

Nailed it.

I hate extra time / golden point. A draw is a perfectly legitimate result

That said, if we absolutely have to have extra time then what he said ^^^

Unless you have some psychic ability to predict a golden point game I don't see how it can effect TV ratings...

Adam

You should know that millions of Australian's tune in every week after the game would normally finish just to check if there's Golden Point going on

They're excited by it

Well, either that or they think the f**king news is about to start

golden point was one of the worst things when channel 9 had the sunday delayed telecast..

you could always tell when it was going to golden point as suddenly they'd be cutting a heap of stuff out of the 2nd half (time between ball going out vs scrum packing & being fed etc..)

during a match that was getting close towards the end of the game you'd look at the clock on the screen and you'd be in the 75th minute, but it would only be around 5.35pm, so you knew they weren't filling those final 20 minutes of the telecast with phil gould's wit & wisdom..

I think most people agree :

Reg Season: Draw
Finals/Origin: 10 mins Extra time followed by Unlimited golden point

Tests are interesting. I'd say
Standalone (eg ANZAC): 10 mins Extra time followed by Unlimited golden point
Pool match/series match: Draw
WC/Series final: 10 mins Extra time followed by Unlimited golden point

Basically Golden point should never be the first option.
You could argue for golden try, but I always prefer K.I.S.S - Keep It Simple Stupid. Draw or full length extra time.

i like all that

however i reckon extra time should go for longer than 10 minutes though. it should be 10 minutes each half.
super fatigue

If a game doesn't need a result to decide a grand final or series win ie Origin then let a draw be a draw.

Yeah piss it off. I hate seeing sides taking ridiculous field goals instead of playing footy. Seriously if you are 50m out put the ball in the corner and f**king defend for an error, or put it through the hands or something.

the thing with how it is now, is that teams realistically could plan a whole heap better and practice field goal formations and tactics etc

it seems they don't.

The 7th tackle rule makes it worse. Each team is basically guaranteed a shot unless they drop it. It makes for very boring football.

agreed. I have two competing thoughts on this:

1. Part of the 7th tackle rule should be it doesnt apply to an attempted FG. If you catch it in goal, it's play on and if it goes dead, give it a 20 metre restart but from tackle 1.

2. And this is the one i think i favour most as it would limit the amount of ridiculous low pecentage FG attempts... but make the rule this:
If you attempt a FG and miss, the ball is turned over from the spot of the attempt for a play the ball @ tackle 1. Unless charged down, in which case it's play on as usual.

I am totally opposed to golden point it's a nonsensical concept IMO.

I will ask this question (keep in mind I am not really a gambling man) but will the NRL refuse to get rid of it because more people will have a punt on the TAB (a major sponsor of the NRL) as a result of it. i.e. If Knights are playing the Roosters people know their is almost certainty going to be a guaranteed winner so they will plonk ex amount of dollars on Newcastle to win and if it goes to G.P and Knights kick a field goal they will clean up as a result of this.

I don't now if going to G.P nulls and voids this as being a legit winner which is why I will pose the question.

Interested in hearing feedback.

If I recall correctly they implemented this rule so teams would stop kicking the ball dead to stop elusive fullbacks getting the ball i.e. Billy Slater.

So IMO the rule should be if the attacking team is within the 20 metre zone and attempting a try it should not be 7 tackles. IMO it's really costly if you kick a grubber just a touch to deep and it's 7 tackles kind of contradicts that rule in the first place IMO.

Only outside the 20 should be 7 tackle count if the ball goes dead.
