This is why NZRL sucks.....

My previous thread "NZ league biggest problem" may have made people uncomfortable and maybe it was controversial.

But of all the views the thread got only 3 replies....and none of the 3 argue my points.

Meanwhile a "FO Kearnery " thread gets over 200 replies....

The NZRL and its followers, including those on this forum, continue to be an apathetic lot who will never look at the big picture on why.......much easier to blame Kearney or similar .

To me the NZRL and Warriors are separate issues, no?

Agree the NZRL sucks, but in a country so dominated by union pretty much everything except the NZRFU does

You made a generalised statement about NZRL being bad because of gang association with clubs.

That was it. You didn't ask questions, you didn't provide any further information, you didn't ask other people what they thought the problem was with NZRL. There was really no lead in for any meaningful debate.

You made a thread that boils down to "gangs bad" and wonder why nobody bothered to reply?

I think both the NZRL and the mighty Warriors face similar problems... and it's not a player problem

I think the apathy is widespread amongst kiwi league fans.. I certainly am over it.

Good thread btw :relaxed:

I think the younger generation of league fans here in NZ quantify league with NRL, not NZRL. And the NZRL doesn't do a whole lot to change that perception. That being said, they're in between a rock and a hard place thanks to the historical dominance (and prejudicial treatment that comes from it) of union in this country and the parochial attitudes of the ARL/ ARL Commission across the ditch.

Gang involvement certainly doesn't help the game's image here, for sure. Still, there's plenty of gang involvement in grass roots Aussie league too but because it's the dominant code in Australia it's not noticed nearly as much.

The NRL is slowly strangling our game here... it has created it's own rules, it has glorified top level footy and forgotten the grass roots level.

I'd love to see the Warriors removed from NZ and we went back to club/provincial comps and a return to a semi pro comp like the old barter card. .

Pie in the sky..

I don't think we could ever go back to that. Remember union went openly professional the same time the Warriors entered their comp, without a professional pathway at home to compete with Super Rugby, League would be history in NZ as anything beyond a social sport.

What hard uncomfortable questions? NZ league has too many gang associations, oohhh no, that makes me squeamish. Can't talk about it. Please.

Like I said a few posts earlier, actually raise some points and address issues, suggest solutions etc and people are more likely to engage in debate. People didn't give your thread any attention because it was really nothing worth giving any attention to.

I actually clicked on this thread looking forward to reading someones view as to 'why NZRL sucks'. Im not alone in hoping that I might read something new and real as Im sure others were too.

Instead Im reading about one posters personal sense of failure in their threads. I can offer one tip - if you going to make an interesting thread title such as this one, then talk about it. Dont destroy your credibility such as this thread is kind of doing now.

Im not debating anything.
Im just trying to get feedback and ideas why NZRL [not the kiwis] has declined so much since the 90's, Maybe its since the warriors? Maybe its because of gangs and idiots running clubs. maybe its just other sports choices, computers and playstations.
The fact is there is stuff all juniors playing in NZ.
Once the faults/problems can be identified then its time to look for remedies.
There was regularly full houses at Carlaw Park for fox club games up until the early 90's. The games esp between Auck and canterbury were of Origin intensity.
Maybe bring back a Bartercard Cup type semi pro league?. ..i dont know?........but at the end of the day you need those kids that are now going to soccer and union.

The stranglehold Union has on the highschool system is a start. Even the NRL clubs would rather pick ex-First 15ers over blokes that have come through the league club system. Ofcourse there are exceptions (the Bromwich boys etc) but for the most part kids would rather play for Mt. Albert Grammar against Kings on TV than for the Lions against Otahuhu infront of drunks. The NRL could invest in the local scene, or they can save money time and effort by just plucking the lads who the All Blacks dont want and put em in their system, hoping that the dollars and tv time will persuade them not to return to their dream.

Simple answer. The NZRL has never been in better shape than when Jim Doyle was in charge. Playing numbers up, money pouring in, results on the field. Before and after the NZRL has been an old boys club full of hasbeens without a clue, troughing it and up to some dodgy dodgy crap at times. Tony kemp resigns following sexual harassment allegations in 2013, back on the board in 2016. NZRL negotiates a deal where we host a bunch of WC games, but receive zero $ for them. Board members fly first class around the world to tourneys, while local comps struggle to keep afloat. They're a joke and a write off, not worthy of discussion

What prevents NZ from having a comp equivalent level (but smaller scale) to the NSW and QLD Cups? As I understand it the top level comp is a 4 team regional played over 3 rounds or something? Pretty uninspiring.

With U20s ending, if Warriors pulled out of NSW Cup to invest in the domestic scene that's 50-60 professional level players back in NZ comps.
It could be a source of income for the NZRL who seem to subsist solely on the scraps from playing the Kangaroos once a year, and don't play at home ever because they can flog tickets for more in Australia.

It would require some investment to bring it up to scratch, and some at the Warriors would likely see it as a lower quality competition for their 2nd graders.
Given the amount of players that NZ provides to the NRL the NZRL should receive NRL funding to similar levels as the NSWRL and QRL do.

Player number wise, I don't think it's really an issue exclusive to rugby league, I've been involved in a bit of administration in another sport and in the last 5 years numbers have dropped at an amazing rate, traditionally strong clubs who in the past had 7-8 teams now struggling to throw together 2-3, and from what I've found, the younger fellas these days don't have a lot of commitment in them when it comes to things like sport on the weekends

League doesn't help itself either with some decisions it makes, down in Christchurch this weekend we have Hornby v Linwood in 3 grades, Stevie Wonder can see the obvious option here, play them all on the same day at the same place and get the punters in. Instead we have Prem reserves playing on the Saturday and Prems on Sunday. Also unfortunate not to have the old rugby league park available this weekend due to a postponement of the semis due to the flooding a few weeks back, park needs to be kept in good shape for the rugby lads lol. CRL have upset the punters though by using a field that has no seating rather than one that does for the grand final, simply so they can charge the spectators to come and watch

The reason you are not getting a lot of response Legs11 is that this problem has been discussed on here before.
It is a real problem and most find it very frustrating seeing the game we love so poorly served in New Zealand.
However it is run on a mainly volunteer basis and struggles for funding.
What are your suggestions to remedy the situation?

I could imagine the gang things being intimidating to deal with.
Compulsory police background checks done?
I have no idea about the money in and out situation, but maybe look to models that have worked in other codes.
