As mentioned recently on the main board, the play he ball seems to be a little slower atm with the increasing use of grappling as a term used to describe it.For those who watched the after match wash up last night there was an discussion between alexander, pearce and the bull regarding it with the general consensus being that it is an increasing area of concern for teams and coaches( except for good old pearce who seems in his naive and straight up way to be stuck in the past).Roy masters also wrote an interesting article about , once again , melbournes use of the "grapple".
This was an interesting piece pointing out the use of "martial arts like holds" and the disguise of such by head placement near the ball. What infact is happening is getting close to this i think. Teams are employing people to lock up not the ball but the shoulder and elbow pivot points which give you far more leverage, than just one place. Also the original grapple that everyone banged on about is essentially basic choke holds that will cut of oxygen via your main artery in the neck real quick. Most of these technics are used to the most deadly in brazilian ju-jitsu..and its thuis guys instructing this stuff to teams.
So this grappling is very real and increasingly becoming a part of the game . I for one do not want to see the ruck become a mini version of UFC , and hope that it is refd accordingly, but if it is done so effectively and by all how can it be stopped??
a ruck ref and a 10 meter ref maybe. Dont really know.
I think that increasing time allowed on players will suit our defence ablilites , with more players coming in hard to tackle and then peeling off and being effective on the ground. in the wrestle. But i think the law makers have to be careful as to how much wrestling is allowed as it has crept up quickly , as Brandy clearly stated there was no such hold/ grappling training 8 years ago but if you noticed the bull he was very au fait with the positioning of his arms to show the pivot points for attack.
Im sure Ricky would be on top of having a top bjj guy but if he didnt may i recommend...
