If he has been suffering from this problem for 18 months then I believe he should not be registered to play NRL or ESL for another 18 months, so that he can recover sufficiently.
Let him get a real job, 9-5 stuff or work on a building site, no public scrutiny, no couple of hundred grand a year for playing football for a few months of the year, and then see how the other half have to exist for 30 -40 years before they can retire.
I reckon a few months of hard work ordinary work will sort him out.

I agree with your sentiments but unfortunately if he was told he couldn't play in the NRL he'd go to the ESL or Union.

mate, i agree with you. despite my genuine exposure to the disease in my life i still feel that it is both the most under-diagnosed and the most over-diagnosed mental disease that exists. the fact is i think that many people who genuinely do have the disease often go untreated, and many people who don't have it are often treated for it - and use it as a convenient scapegoat. i believe this is particularly true because it has only recently been identified as a stand-alone mental illness and is currently the "in" thing in psych medicine circles.

i am - however - just talking out my arse, but that's the way i see it.

No, there are more than a few people who agree. Asking around the office this afternoon confirmed what you said there is a view held by plenty.

Unfortunately, they're given this crutch by bleeding hearts and it makes them think that they're not responsible for their actions.

I read a bit about it and that seems to be the consensus. To me it's something people bandy about way too much, like ADHD. Most of the things I've read about footballers doing are things that plenty of people, even people I know, do without being diagnosed as being Bi-polar or having ADHD.

Willie for example, who here thinks the strife Willie got into was really ADHD or Willie just being a dickhead with too much time on his hands?

Anyway, I really hope Tim gets to an enviroment where he'll be able to straighten himself out.

How ignorant some people are. What does Tim Smith's behaviour have to do with him having bi-polar?? He was never using it as an excuse for his past actions. I'm like you, a bit sceptical when it comes to diagnosing mental illnesses. However, I also understand the fact that trained professionals know a lot more than I do on the subject amd it's not fair to comment on something I know very little about. Maybe you should do some more research instead of making a fool of yourself.

Don't talk rot.

This, if you hadn't noticed, is a public discussion board. It's not a "don't discuss things unless you're a paid professional board".

FFS, if everyone had your attitude no one would be here because there's f**k all rugby League experts here.

There's plenty who think they are, but f**k all who actually are.

Give yourself an uppercut.

While you're at it, punch yourself in the left temple for saying "it's not fair to comment on something I know very little about" whilst in the same post doing exactly that.

no matter which way you look at it you base your opinion on assumptions.
No-one knows the circumstances better then Tim, his family & his doctor.
I agree that you have to take full responsibility for your actions, but no-one hear should even attempt to assess Tim's situation because no-one hear can even begin to comprehend what he's going through.
It's so easy to look up bi-polar on Google & get the jist of things.. but I don't think it's fair that people start throwing around scapegoats and bleeding hearts to try & sum up his situation because it could just as easily go either way.
I just hope Tim Smith screws his head on straight & overcomes his demons, whatever they may be

The main difference there being that we can see what is happening on the field every week, and therefore I can say "No EA, such and such is playing crap, because ....."

But you have no idea if Tim is really sick or just using it as an excuse, so you should shut the hell up about it.

Watch out mate, making a funny in this situation is poor form and you'll upset the PC brigade.
Well this just shows your character up perfectly. Seems you can't tell the difference between being understanding and being overly PC. They're not one and the same. People can be understanding of other people's situations (or try to be understanding) without being a softy, lefty, PC pushover.

The joke WAS funny (well, a bit funny, not the greatest joke ever but pretty good), whereas your comments are ignorant and uninformed.

I don't have a problem with the public discussion. I have a problem with the fact you're making vague comments in regards to a disease which you have no knowledge of.

Maybe you should give yourself an uppercut. It's one thing to comment on football which is firstly a game, and also a an obsession of everyone in this forum. To compare knowledge of rugby league to the knowledge of a serious mental disorder shows how narrow minded you are.

You are right though, I don't know much about Bi-Polar. I know that I know that though, whereas you don't seem to but pretend you do. That is unfair on anyone who suffers, or knows anyone who suffers from it.

By the way, do you have children?

How many chances are Parramatta going to give Smith before he is finally dumped? He is a disgrace to Parramatta and to Rugby League in this country with his continued drunken behavior. The Mighty,Mighty Eels should sack him forthwith.

f**k me, another expert.

No, you can't say that because you're thick.

But you have no idea if Tim is really sick or just using it as an excuse, so you should shut the hell up about it.

And neither do you, so shut the f**k up yourself.

What's this thread about, have a look at its title you f**king dweeb.

Well this just shows your character up perfectly. Seems you can't tell the difference between being understanding and being overly PC. They're not one and the same. People can be understanding of other people's situations (or try to be understanding) without being a softy, lefty, PC pushover.

See, you're a softy, left, PC softcock.

Anyone who is a bit depressed should avoid you at all costs, 20 minutes with you and they'll be heading for the gap.

The joke WAS funny (well, a bit funny, not the greatest joke ever but pretty good), whereas your comments are ignorant and uninformed.

No, it was just funny as is your post.

Why the f**k did you bother you limp-wristed terminal wally?

And you're an expert on it?

Or are you just the forum conscience?

Goose.

That is a ludicrous thing to say.

If you take this sh*t that seriously, you're in for a long, hard, lonely life champ.

I'll say what I think whether a hypocritical PC pissant like you likes it or not.

What to know what you need to do?

Turn the computer off.

You are right though,

Yeah, I know.

I don't know much about Bi-Polar.

Yeah, I know but you were happy to cast your own opinion then have a shot at me for stating mine.

Go f**k yourself.

I know that I know that though, whereas you don't seem to but pretend you do. That is unfair on anyone who suffers, or knows anyone who suffers from it.

Kill yourself, you're wasting air.

By the way, do you have children?

Yeah I do.

Tell me, do you think your balls will drop soon?

Welcome to the forums Johnmack. A great first post... maybe you should read yesterday's newspapers before you make any further contribution today ;-)

Tim Smith had he stayed on would and will never have been sacked for his past indiscretions....
he would have only been sacked if he actually did something that warranted it.

His mental state isnt the best, which is obviously why he has left and gone home.
EA - you do realise he isnt making excuses and has copped it all on the chin dont you?

Some points on here i agree and disagree with... E

I know one guy with it and he is crazy... nice bloke when well medicated though, the other person I knew who had it, jumped off a mountain. This person really struggled all her life, very sad.

Bi-Polar is being bandied about a bit too much for my liking and my experience with people who have it, (I know of a few more) well lets just say it is pretty obvious something is terribly wrong.

That said, I'm not saying that my observations are accurate.. I'm not a doctor/phychiatrist. (Or an English teacher)

I don't assume that Joey or T. Smith are lying, saying that you have a mental disease especially being a public figure (of sorts) would be difficult to say the least. I just hope that it's not a case mis-diagnosis, like the AD/HD in children was in the late 90's early 00's.
