OK, from now on I'll be warm and fuzzy and toe the party line....
Tim Smith was in great form in 2008 and will be sadly missed.....
He only played three freakin' games... and I thought he was getting better with each hit-out. Still nowhere near back to where we know he can be, of course.
There's a difference between 'warm and fuzzy' and supportive. I for one do not go in for the Spartan tack of putting the children out on the mountain to brave the elements and either survive or die. Sometimes it pays to, you know, support your players?
Of course you can be critical of a player who is not performing, but it's the way you go about it. Some people chose to judge the kid before he even got a game under his belt this year, ignoring what he has achieved during an injury-interrupted three years with us. He was rookie of the year and let the club to the minor premiership at 20. Last year we were within a game of the grand final. But the same old tragics continued to be hard to impress. The kid gets bagged week in and out, scapegoated for losses. And here we are. A shame.
Some might say that he should get a thicker skin, but then they don't really comprehend what it is to suffer this sort of condition, where even the most capable and talented individuals constantly question whether they are up to scratch in their career and in life. It's not easy. You take every criticism to heart. Sure, this is no way to go on in life, and something an individual needs to address, but being bagged out irrationally every week can't help.
Tim's done the right thing by himself and chosen to get some proper help. Now it's the turn of a fair ration of our petty fans to do the same, I reckon.
Look out Finchy. This week you're the great white hope. Lose to Manly and you be the next one lined up by the rabid mob. God help Parramatta's number seven.
