Luke Burt backing Timana Tahu to shine in his return to rugby league

By Todd Balym
December 09, 2009

Parramatta veteran Luke Burt says Timana Tahu is "killing it" in his return to rugby league and the Eels winger is keen to play outside the dual international in 2010.
Tahu is one of Parramatta's three major signings for the 2010 season as the Eels go about rectifying their heartbreaking grand final loss to Melbourne Storm.

After two seasons in rugby union the 29-year-old has returned to league joining a star-studded backline at Parramatta headlined by Dally M medallist Jarryd Hayne.

Burt said Tahu has been outstanding in the first four weeks of pre-season training and he is excited about what the former Wallaby will bring to the game next year.

“You just have to watch him, he is killing it actually,” said Burt.

“He is just that explosive and skillful.

“I think deep down he is probably happy (to be back) ... the Parramatta club and especially myself are very happy to see him back because the stuff he can bring to the game is unbelievable.

“He is going to be someone that you wouldn't mind playing outside of.

“I would love to be on the left wing outside T. That would be my plan.

“We have got great competition for positions this year. That is good as well. We're in a good position for this time of the year.”

Burt said the Eels other key signings, Dragons prop Justin Poore and Roosters forward Shane Shackleton, had also settled in well at their new club.

And while the Eels aren't short of motivation heading into the 2010 NRL season, Burt says he won't be watching any replays of the side's seven-point grand final loss to Melbourne.

“I don't think anyone has mentioned it to be honest,” he said of the bitter defeat.

“I don't think I will ever (watch it). I haven't watched 2001 and I don't think I'll watch 2009.”

Awesome news. A fully fit Tahu is about the most explosive back in the NRL today and am so glad he is is back in Parra colours next year.

I just pray the "killing it" part does not jeopardise his hamstring and it holds up OK next year .

There is a very tough decision to be made on who to leave out of the three-quarter line. Unless Anderson wants to experiment with Tahu at 5/8 - in which case there will be a tough decision on who to leave out of the halves. Glad I`m not the coach!

one things for certain, if everyone's fit than Brett Kenny will be very happy to have a superstar playing in the wenty side..

i'm still leaning towards INU missing out..

Based on form last year, I'm thinking Inu will miss out and Reddy will partner Tahu in the centres.

We had a good run with backline injuries last year, and let's face it we can't always be that lucky. Inu will get his chance at some point and then it's up to the injured player to work their way back into the line-up.

Reddy is more of an all-rounder, can play full back, wing, center or in the pack (in an emergency) so I guess Reddy to be one of the 4 reserves

Not exactly in this order

Hayne
Grothe
Inu
Tahu
Burt
Mortimer
Robson
Mateo
Smith
Hindmarsh
Poore
Keating
Cayless
Keating
Reddy
Fui
Mannah/Shackleton

Bar Poore, Cayless, Mannah & Fui, DA will push the other forwards to be 80 minute players but they will be given rests if the team requires extra speed in the play the balls to help push the defensive walls back and back, creating staggered lines that allow the Eels awesome 2nd phase plays to exploit them. Eels will have many highly explosive battleships blasting through these staggered lines ALL GAME. Expect 2001 like score cards all season.

At the play the balls, I also think Inu, Tahu, Reddy, Grothe & Hayne will be regularly used as fast-hard-hitting (95/100kilo+) attackers, close on either side of the ruck or up the middle while pushing Fui, Hindmarsh, Cayless, etc further out wide to run at backs and have Burt, Mortimer, Robson, Keating, etc running off them.

With so many big fast strong players in the 17, DA to mix up the attack creating nightmares for any defensive coach. Then there is the kick through or over the top to mix it up even more.

FMD you've got me excited about those backs, Caspar! 2001-esque scorelines, can't wait!
One concern , and I hope I'm being over-cautious , is still Robson @ half.
He is , at best , a Shane Perry - like performer.
He played some wonderful games for us this year esp v Tiges @ SFS, and also some less- than wonderful ones. Even within any given game , you still had a nagging doubt he might throw a Kusto- like pass , or get run through, as in the GF .His primary role should be to be the link between the powerful forwards and the wizard backs.
If he throws in the odd run himself , or attacking short kick , just to mix it up , he will add one more dimension of uncertainty for the opposition defences.

DA to work to our strengths... OUR IMMENSELY NATURAL GROWING STRENGTHS (not the cheating hormone strengths).

Keep to very simple game plans and let the Eels natural overall strengths/skills win the games. The sun knows what it has to do so why complicate things. Same with this awesome Eels squad.

I would love to be the coach of this squad, keeping in focus the discipline, great all-round skills, hard work philosophy, no ego trips/level headed team-players playing for each other and an incredible never say die attitude instilled in this team.

Don't forget the absolute blinder Robson turned on in the 2009 GF qualifier against the dogs!!!! Considering the occasion, the significance and the pressure/responsibilities placed on his shoulders, while keeping in focus his lack of top 17 experience at this intense highly scrutinizing level, particularly against a very well drilled team in attack, defense and composure/confidence, it was his best game all-season thus far.

I keep saying it because it needs to be said,........ without Robbo the Eels would not have got into the 2009 semis or the GF. He is that good. What he brings to the table is so overlooked by so many members of this excellent Eels forum. It appears, too many members are comparing him to what they are used too (and expect) from other great 7's instead of focusing on his natural skills and strengths, what he brings to the table. Robbo is calm, relaxed, composed and patient.

Playing 1st grade for 3 months+ straight, he now knows what the standard is. After a background of riding only trail bikes he will no longer have the subtle wobbles one gets when one hops on a Kawasaki 750 for the 1st time.

If I was coach of this 2010 team, Robbo would be my 1st picked player, make him captain (Let Caylo focus on his game and thoroughly enjoy his twilight years) and then I would build a team around him to orchestrate all over the park as GENERAL, BUT, I would also have drilled this team extensively to operate without him just in case of injury. However, with Robbo, he is not easily prone to injury that would keep him off the park too often. He is one tough AMIGO and we should get him playing at least 70 to 80% of all games 2010.

Robson, has grown in confidence and the trust put into Robson from DA & PO will help Robbo excel as the Eels general. I predict that Robbo will be one of the top ten NRL players of 2010. He could even win the 2010 Dally M. All the players love Robbo and they really enjoy his company and they ALL listen to him. He is very well respected. Robbo is a doer. He walks-the-talk.

Robbo felt the nerves of many of his team mates in the 2009 GF and went about plugging all the holes they created. He was playing TOO MUCH of a looking after your team mates game that day instead of just focusing on what he had to do. He was ALL over the park that day putting out so many fires. This caused Robbo not to play his best LOOKING GOOD game.

BUT he learned a great lesson that day (so did his team mates) and it will not happen again. Watch the 2009 GF again and witness all the holes Robbo was trying to plug for 80 minutes.

2010 & beyond, I see improvements in areas of his game that were seen as being not so good during 2009.

Im going to watch that game against the Broncos in 2007 again, where Tahu scored his 100th and 101st try in first grade.

My favourite Eel of all time. (Note, I dont remember the legends)

Casper, I agree with everything you said, but...Robbo as captain over Hindy or Burty? :?

Yep, the buzz of Robbo being captain will lift all the players around him as they did for the last 12 games of the 2009 season.

Hindy does not have the tactical on-field skills in the heat of the moment to be a GENERAL running the tram al over the park. Hindy is too often in the firing line doing what he is very good at. Lets leave Hindy alone.

Burty, is not a General. Burty is a freak, best to let the freak shine instead of allowing his freaky spontaneous skills be clouded/bogged down by captaincy.

Robbo is the General now. He has the right temperament to be captain, even better than Caylo. It's time for DA to tap Caylo on the shoulder unless Caylo does it himself. Jeff is so composed and relaxed during the heat of battle, that he is able to (in his brain), step back, assess what is going on all around him from a high vantage spot, and make an instant decision.

Mortimer, Hayne, Burt, Mateo and the two Keatings can handle most of the kicking game when required while Robbo orchestrates the attack and defence (with Burt, Hayne and Tahu supporting him in defence).

With Robbo captain the Eels get three benefits, a) all the other players get to play their best games without the burden of being captain, b) Mortimer learns from Robbo (and others), is allowed to be groomed and will take over as captain (and probably number 7) when Robbo retires in three years or so. c) Robbo is a natural captain and the Eels machine will be even slicker with him as boss.
