Time to restrict VR to captains call only?

I think we can all agree that whilst the introduction of the bunker has reduced wrong calls by refs it has come at a very high price. Constant stoppages, the excitement of your team scoring a try diminished, more controversy when the bunker gets it wrong etc

It has been interesting to see the reaction to the ashes outcome. No one really blamed the umpire for making a bad call but put the blame on the wasted captains call. So is it time to claw back and bring in two captains call a half and only allow the ref to use VR to review foul pay?

Agree the game is getting pretty frustrating to watch. Two a half is too many IMO. You know teams would gamble and we'd still end up with 8 reviews a match. 2 each for the match is enough.

Strong agree here, although not sold on the Bunker's ability to make the correct call.

absolutely stupid idea, for those who watch cricket would know that everyone is calling to get rid of it.
the solution is to get better people in the bunker

I think it should be a coaches call tbh but that's neither here nor there
A challenge system of some kind is the way forward

I think so as well. Put more on the coaches plate because at present they don’t have much to do except come up with ways to manipulate the game.

With challenges we'll still be going to the bunker a lot. And it doesn't stop the bunker from getting it wrong like they do now.

Many of the issues stems from playing super slow mo footage back and forth for 3 mins to look for a potential knock on, escort or whatever. It's clear to me that it needs an overhaul in that regard.

Captains challenge will not fix the frustration many of us currently have on the bunker. And I don't even blame the bunker officials - they're under pressure to look at everything to the nearest millimetre.

I don't know if bringing back benefit of the doubt will resolve this, but I think i prefer it over what we have now

Anyone know what the avg bunker review amount is per game this season? It feels like about 80% of tries/no tires are going up? At least with capt's call you can limit it to two or four a game, if needed. We cant get rid of the bunker sadly but we can limit it to less impacting on the enjoyment of the game. This is supposed to be entertainment after all.

Not necessarily, as we saw in the cricket if you burn them it can come back to burn you. Id think most would keep them up their sleeve for something they were confident about or if in last two minutes and nothing to lose? Id be happy with two as long as you kept your call if found to be an incorrect decision.

One reason I am sure it is a great idea is that last time it was proposed it was shot down brutally by Craig Bellamy at some coaches/rules conference. I think his quote was "can we put this to bed now for good?"

If Bellamy doesn't like it, it has to be good.

Can you play another song? This one is getting really boring...

If there is a line ruling the the bunker works very well

For dropped balls or held up or double movement - in goal touch judge works better

For bombs where it's a lottery during the contest on who caught it - maybe a simplification of rule is needed
- ball goes forward in attack it's always a knock on
- knock backs should not be ruled 6 to go

But I would also add Chargedowns or legblocks should not be 6 to go

Simple solution....

Use VR only for black and white decisions, and make the refs accountable. Too many are happy to let VR do their work.

Obstruction and escort should no longer be reviewable, as it’s a grey area. If one of you two mugs cant spot it in real time, you dont get to review it.

Grounding, onside, upheld, knock on, cross the line, double movement, that’s all fine.

When any review is going on the coaches should be allowed on the field to talk to the players. No trainers should be allowed out there unless the coach is out there.

That way the TV and commentators might spend the minute on what is going on in the huddle rather than spending the whole time rolling replay after replay and whipping themselves into a frenzy.

The NRL needs to try to distract the commentators from the replays as much as possible.
