Don't think so. All the NFL teams are privately owned and they have a salary cap that works and even a draft.
I guess the governing body just puts rules in place regarding private ownership, such as salary cap. What I would like to see is a rule stating no team can be moved. (e.g Newcastle Knights to Perth Knights). We don't want to get like the US where a team may move across the country. That sux!

It does but it has also proved a great threat option when clubs have been trying to get new stadiums etc. out of their Govt's.

Private owners pulling out, after varying lengths of time, of many businesses have often caused acute financial pain.

they just sell the club to another millionaire...

this is all over proffesional sport... around the world

whats the problem ?

Von, on that point, do the NFL clubs spend their entire cap?

As with all hypotheticals, probably will never happen that the cap will go altogether.

More likely scenario could be certain clubs pushing heavily for the cap to be increased significantly.

Just as an aside, being a more astute businessman will he look to increase the knights fanbase more and target other areas, such as CC?

I think he more wants to shore up Hunter support. There is plenty there. The task is to put bums on seats

what will be the capacity of the Knights stadium this year, is that big stand finished?

Shame they didn;t do this deal a few months ago, they could have signed Inglis as a marquee signing to get the club buzzing for the new season.

It doesn't matter what the club SOLD for, it's what the club and the fans get out of the deal.

On the one hand, no sale = struggle street and possible future extinction.

Sale = income, better playing roster, paid off debts, improved facilities, better opportunity, increased memberships etc etc etc

As a non Souths fan, I can see that the sale to Russell Crowe was the best thing for Souths. Hell, even a blind man could see that.

of course it matters what it sold for...

$3m or $100m... your call..

(and btw, if rusty has put in the equivalent of $10m per year into the club, i'll paint myself green & red for the charity shield..)

so what did rusty pay $3m for then?..

Go and read my post, I explained it.

I know you have the IQ of a gnat, but even you should be able to understand it.

and don't kid yourself that your fans "own" your colours... souffs have gone from being red & green to red, green & white, or red, green & black, depending on who is paying rusty the most that week

Wow, black or white trim. Nice try.

and hey, homebush is in sydney, yes.. but goddamn it's a long way from redfern.. and in the heart of parrmatta & bulldogs territory nonetheless..

You are the dope saying that we have abandoned our local area.

You have moved your home games to another city.
How is that tradition?

yep, i'm sorry i did that.. i hold myself personally responsible

Yet you decide to throw barbs at clubs that have looked to change their ownership structure?

You are a dope.

it's very much still the dragons... same uniform.. same leagues club.. same home ground, same record of success..

You are a club that merged with another one.

The NRL even states that your premiership last year was your first.

You play home games in another city now.

yep.. just like resch's brewery after CUB bought them..

What a stupid comparison.

Using a liquor analogy, your merger (more aptly takeover) is akin to when Fosters took over Southcorp. All the good stuff was on the Southcorp side (Illawarra had all the good players).

Only difference is that Fosters can spin off their wine assets, you cannot do the same with Illawarra.

(yes, win stadium / wollongong showground) has been the traditional home of rugby league for the illawarra team when playing in the national comp.. we've never moved from there..)

What since 1982?

It is not your teams traditional home ground in any case.

Call our ground a bucket shop, but we still had more people through the gates at home than you.

Oh yeah, we also don't have a Sizzlers across the road.

it will be finished for Round 4. 34,000 capacity with the ability to hold 40k with temporary seating on the hills - as per the minimum requirements for the world cup bid.

i reckon we'll fill it in round 4 against the dragons if this deal goes through. could be a huge groundswell of positive vibes coming out of Newcastle over the next few months. there is finally a lot for us to be happy about... and to my surprise it has only taken us 4 years after the retirement of Johns to get there. when all the dramas of the past few years are all said and done, we may have forgotten it all in another 12 months.

funnily enough if we had good facilities, plenty of cash and decent administration it may have taken us longer to recover.

34k, wow that is great. Will be a great sight to see it packed out. I guess a membership push is big on the agenda with that capacity availble to fill?

absolutely i would say. we maintain around 7-8k members to the best of my knowledge. i would expect that to inflate substantially over the next few years if we privatise.

i say if we privatise, because the biggest barrier for this sale i perceive is that our membership would be mostly fuddy duddy old supporters that may not like Mr Tinkler taking their club, even if it is the best thing for it. hopefully the board approves it and gets those old boys over the line.

ziggy, ziggy, ziggy... you are an oddball aren't you...

Wow, black or white trim. Nice try.

still changed buddy.. there are many articles written about how the jersey represents the club, and that is what fans get passionate over.. change the club colours, change the spirit... simple as that..

How is that tradition?

never realized homebush was part of south sydney.. guessing my compass & map needs updating..

and ziggy, how the hell have we "moved games to another city" when both kogarah and win stadium are the spiritual home grounds and locations of the two sides in the joint venture..

to quote you,

I know you have the IQ of a gnat, but even you should be able to understand it.

now.. what else is wrong with your argument...

You are a club that merged with another one.

The NRL even states that your premiership last year was your first.

You play home games in another city now.

pick your argument buddy.. have we sold out tradition or are we a new entity? if we are a new entity as you are saying ,then our tradition has remained the same since our inception in 99... so hardly sold it out..

Using a liquor analogy, your merger (more aptly takeover) is akin to when Fosters took over Southcorp. All the good stuff was on the Southcorp side (Illawarra had all the good players).

incorrect.. southcorp had the good award winning labels such as penfolds.. the illawarra had never won a premiership..

and besides, the liquor analogy was to show that a business does not remain the same, when a new owner comes in.. (and hey, even the southcorp/fosters one works.. which highlights that your new owner = death of your old club spirit)

What since 1982?

It is not your teams traditional home ground in any case.

once again, pick your argument.. are we a new entity or a club that sold it's soul? if we're a new entity, then it's the tradtional ground for SGID.. but if we have sold our soul, it's the traditional ground for the illawarra..

Call our ground a bucket shop, but we still had more people through the gates at home than you.

really? where are your figures sir?

Oh yeah, we also don't have a Sizzlers across the road.

thank christ.. have you seen the size of inglis? he'd only get fatter...

perverse, you positive talk sounds great.

I hope the Knights accept Tinks.

And I hope you fill the ground against Saints.

(I have a great feeling about the game as a whole this year).

only 58 sleeps to go!!!!!

i reckon we'll fill it in round 4 against the dragons if this deal goes through.

I was at the same game last year. It was packed out despite the annoying the construction, but the atmosphere was electric. I can't wait till we get a 30,000+ crowd in there.

i just think after reading miles and miles and miles of anti-Knights sentiment in the media, on the forums and in the opinion of general punters everywhere else... in spite of all of it we're in a position where fans have a lot to be happy and excited about, and it's about time. a much improved roster, a new stadium and potential financial freedom for the next 10 years, who wouldn't be excited?

just note that this thread has been void of the usual Knights Hate Machine. i'd be interested to hear what skeepe, R69 and the rest of them think of all this. then again, they only have something to say when our club is in the sh*t, don't they?

There is no reason the Knights can't become a powerhouse with the number of fans and love of RL in the region, a great stadium, and a wealthy benefactor.

It would be great for the game.

There could be some sensational grudge matches against the Bears in years to come.
