The situations are totally different. America is in that position because they chose themselves to be the world superpower as the UK once did. If that's the position you want to be in you have to do certain things. Trump seems to think he can pull up the draw bridge and still be this same super power. It won't work like that I'm afraid.
The U.K. on the other hand is no longer a superpower and has very different views to most of the EU. We get drowned out in the noise from Germany and France.
