I don't think the coaches clash means as much as it could, it'd be good if they came out and said they hated each other so at least the media would build it up as some sort of event. I get the impression Smith would at least be personally fired up for something like this, even if he doesn't say so, while Hagan couldn't give a stuff. Smith at Newcastle vs Hagan at Parra, probably equals his constant firing up for matches between Smith's Eels vs Bennett's Broncos. Congrats on 500 games to him do, doesn't get enough credit for an achievement.

As an Eels supporter, I would like to hear your honest analysis and opinion of Michael Hagan (as a coach). During the 1 1/2 season reign he's been at Parramatta, what do you think of him?

Hagan....I can sum him up in one sentence.

EVERY Newcastle coach (McMahon, Waite, Reilly, Ryan) has left the club in a better position than they found it, except for Michael Hagan.

10/10 response there, Engine!

I was just wondering: Is it my imagination or not, that scintillating players, such as Jarrad Hayne, Feleti Mateo, Krisnan Inu and co. are not performing to the potential that we know they can? I dunno, but everytime I look at Parramatta play, they've got a lot of talented players in their squad, but look like a very unmotivated, uninspired team.

Hagan? Well, you probably know how I feel about him. Despite the premiership he was gifted by Johns (and to a lower extent, Kennedy) in 2001, the Knights progressively got worse in every subsequent year after that until his final year in 2006 (again, where Andrew Johns saved his bacon). Without Andrew Johns, the Knights had an atrotious record under Hagan and although Johns made crap players look like absolute worldbeaters, he also made Hagan look like a human clone of Jack Gibson. I don't know about you Parra fans, but the one thing that really peeved us off and didn't go down well with us at the Knights was Hagan's continual selection of grossly under-performing and lower grade quality players. He had one of those mentalities along the lines of, "It doesn't matter that you lost by 40 points today or for the other 20 or so times where we got flogged, you played the best game I've ever seen".

I liked him at first, but that was mainly because he was the complete opposite to Smith and the player's needed someone who was a bit more approachable and laid back. Smith was a great coach for us over the years, but since he was there so long the long term players really needed someone of a different background and attitude.

The other positive about Hagan at first, was that he went to length to sign our juniors and up and coming players for the next few seasons. When Smith was at Parramatta the club was a turnstyle, players would come in and be gone the following year. We had a different halfback every year and we lost a stack of players we should have kept. The fact Hagan attempted to sign up our current players meants stability at the club, which was something our club hasn't had for a long time. And given the Mateos, Inus, Haynes coming through it was great.

This year so far, I've been disappointed with his team selections, he doesn't appear to suggest any specific game plans and the team looks lost out on the field. He doesn't seem to be a very tactical coach or strategic coach. He's got some good qualities. I think he can be a good coach at the right team, like a Nathan Brown for example, but a club like Parramatta need something more than that.

Oztips is great. The Newcastle Knights website use it, and it's great being able to change the tips just before kick-off of the first game. (Some even allow it before the kick-off of each game)
