as nospam49 ever so subtly pointed out, your average rugby league fan (luckily) does not have a degree in ancient mythology. Many of them have to make do with the adventure comics on the coco pops box or the happy meal toys.

A Neptune/Poseidon based character would be a great mascot, but it isn't a Titan! It is a god--there is a difference. It's not that many would really know the difference...

I like Pirates...here in the States, you don't see the Wiggles unless you are in the habit of watching Toon Disney...something my little brother gave up 4 years ago.

Okeanus is the Titan God of the Sea.

Stingers 56%? Of the three that is the outsider! That must be screwy, well the poll is screwy because I single handedly voted a few dozen times. How can the Gold Coast RLFC put their future in the hands of such a dodgy polling interface?

In other news the poll has been taken off NRL.com...so I guess that is it. It is done and dusted...

And why not just poll the Gold Coast people instead of everyone? Maybe outsiders want the new team to have a stupid name.

Yea exactly! Gold Coasters seem to want Titans, it is their team and they should get whatever they want.

I know it's a bit too late, but I think the Gold Coast Gladiators would have been a good name. Would have warmed your heart, huh Diehard?

If they did it right. ;-) :D

But there is only one Diehards, so it wouldn't be the same or feel right. Gladiators in their own right and idenity would have been ok, but I'm glad they are going after a more appropriate mascot for the Gold Coast.

It does suprise me that Gladiators didn't get more of a run. With rugby league being the gladiatorial sport!

But besides the Diehards are going to be the 2nd Brisbane team, we can't be both.

Nah Gladiators has been used before by the Gold Coast, I think a merger of the three would be good

They could be the Gold Coast Titanic Stinging Pirates!

Stingers - would work. Sting ray in the logo.
Titans - I'd be worried they'd do something half-naked and muscly...
Pirates - I don't think that would catch on?

All Titan supporters agreed a buff, god-like creature brandishing a trident would be an ideal mascot.

I hate to break it to you but a "Buff" god with a Trident is Poseidon

http://www.pantheon.org/articles/p/poseidon.html

Also know as Neptune in the Roman.

Poseidon was the Brother of Zues (god on mountain tops with lightning bolt image) and they were both sons of the Titans Cronus and Rhea.

Other Offspring of Cronus and Rhea are
Hedes - God of the Underworld
Hera - Wife of Zues (her bother) and Goddess of Birth and Marriage
Demeter - Earth Goddess, Bringer of fertility.
Hestia - Goddess of the Hearth Fire Goddess of domestic life.

But all of these are God's Not Titans.

No sh*t mythology police.

How we want to portray a Titanic god of the sea is up to interpretation.

And only 2% of fans would know the difference between Okeanus and Neptune and only 0.003% would be a fuss pot and care.

Do yourself a favour and don't look at St George. Who were the Dragonslayers and are now the Dragons.

A massive paradox.

The care factor from fans? Negligible.

They reigned over Earth in Greek mythology, it's larger than life as one of the many faces of Saturn, and then there is the iconic Aussie shed.

But the Titan namesake will soon resound in stadiums and lounge rooms across the nation if Gold Coasters have anything to do with it.

A preliminary poll by The Gold Coast Bulletin concluded that the Titans are emerging as a favourite for the name of the Gold Coast National Rugby League team, which will take to the field for the 2007 season.

Although potential names were only narrowed to the final three on Thursday, local league fans are barracking for the Titans, historically revered for their size and strength. The Stingers are a close second.

Gold Coast NRL boss Michael Searle said although it was still too early to pick the winner, he said it was good to see people taking a keen interest in the team.

Most Titan supporters said that the godly characteristics of the Greek legends most befitted the future team, over Stingers or Pirates. But some were dubious of the name, often associated with the popular brand of tin shed.

Burleigh supporter Josh Stanton, 19, said he was hoping the Titans would prevail. "It represents the Gold Coast as being stronger, which is important in football," he said.

All Titan supporters agreed a buff, god-like creature brandishing a trident would be an ideal mascot. However, a stingray has also been flagged.

An official poll posted on the NRL's website has already had its credibility questioned as fans appear to have free reign over the survey, with no limit on how many times they can vote. Will Stingers be jellyfish? Page 179

I also hope we can choose from a few different logo's once they announce the Titans as the mascot. The voting thing has worked so far and I dont want to stuck with a dud logo for ever!!!!
