1) What was Des Hasler like as a player, when he was at Manly (was he a good player) ?
2) Do you believe that the Manly Sea Eagles side of 2007 is better than the one they had in their glory years of 1995-97?
3) What are your thoughts on the '95 and '96 Grand Finals?
4) Are you for an afternoon GF or not? How do you think tonights GF would've went, had it been held on today at 3pm, instead of 7pm?
5) I read in the newspaper today that Manly were supposedly on the verge of folding a few years ago. What's this all about? I always thought they were crusing and under control once they got back to Brookvale Oval midway in 2002 and were no longer the Northern Eagles (although they still kept the name that year for merchandising purposes)

Parra fan answers:

1. Good player
2. No way
3. 95 GF - pretty good 96 - beat Fagons who can't win a title in a one-team comp
4. Night night night... imagine the GF on Sunday with the heat..
5. best left for manly fans to answer..

Yeah, on the topic of that, it's tipped to be 34 degrees tomorrow. Imagine playing in 34 deg heat! heheheh! I don't think a match has been played in those conditions before.

But, what I don't understand is how was Manly on the brink of collapsing 4 yrs ago? I thought a team that is located in the Northern Beaches would be filthy rich? Also, what about all that stuff 10-12 yrs ago, when they had all the best players and stuff? Of course they had money. Don't know why ppl say Manly nearly folded and such.

Manly gave all their money to ARL in the superleague war of 1997. We never finanacially recovered as the money was never repayed. We came within 5 hrs of bankruptcy before Max Delmege stepped in and offered sponsorship.

The demographic of your suburb doesn't necessarily mean that the club will be rolling in Benajmins.

Revesby workers for example has pure gold toilets, yet the actual suburb is a sh*thole.

A long story short -

Arko being the head ARL honcho, as well as Manly Leagues, threw alot of cash at the SL War. Part of the "peace deal" between the ARL and SL was that the team was to be cut down to a 14 team compeition. After the merger between Saints/Illawarra and Wests/Tigers I guess alot of teams were tempted by the apaprant financial power and stability that went along with having a merger.

I may be corrected, but Manly after being lured by the carrot of a merger, joined with Norths in a hope of securing financial stability.

The stadium was a f*ck up, Norths went bankrupt thus leaving Manly with the financial burden of running a joint entity with joint debts and costs.

Max originally pumped a mere 800K in the eleventh hour, which soon turned to a few more million and the rest is history.

There was a great article about Max's involvement with the club, since 2002 he has invested something like twelve million.

10-12 years ago we did have the best players, but people have to retire one day.

I found this comment on another thread. I was just wandering what do you think this person means when they say this:

"But it was Super League that killed it for me. I use to be a big Manly supporter. Loved Cliffy, Hasler and Toovey. Now I could only name one player in the team today - menzies. They took my team away and then brought it back but it was too late.
People say to me that I have my team Manly back now what’s the big deal. Too late. It’s like your partner cheating on you - it’s just not the same afterwards."

What do you think the person means with the part that is highlighted in Bold font?

No we haven't, why the hell should we? If the government gives you a research grant and you f**k up and don't find anything, you don't have to pay it back.

Maybe Wests and Balmain should hand back all of the cash that the ARL gave them to hold on to players during the Super League War?

It seems that the years 1995 to 1998 draw a massive blank in the eyes of a lot of Manly Haters...Maybe the club should have left the corpses to rot and jumped ship.

It was actually only something more too the tune of $6 Million but you can't put a price on how many people he made happy that day.

Also, it needs to be pointed out that Max's money was used as a loan with memberships from fans being used to 'buy' back the club. So every fan owns a little piece of the club.
