Actually places are held for major stories & they are printed only hours prior to delivery. The Saturday SMH arrives in 2 seperate print runs. All the lifestyle stuff is flown the night before then the headlines, business & sport are printed throught the hours of the morning.
The Telegraph keeps printing & changes as stories come in & photos. The telgraph in Brisbane is quite outdated generally with its 12hour our old stories.

LEADER.
- Leader is printed noon/afternoon Wednesday at Fairfax Chullora.
- Format and stories are sent via satellite to print site and it takes about 35 minutes to an hour from plate making, to press, to post press, to bundles rolling off the line onto the trucks. Trucks go to distro, are organised for delivery and paper is delivered Thursday.
- They can run seperate issues, but its rare for a suburban newspaper. I think they may even pay a fine for this.
SMH/DAILY TELE.
- Are printed the preceeding night.
- Up to ten different issues can be printed in one night. The first runs printed are for regional areas and start around 7pm. Metro papers can roll of the line as late as 5/6am. At any time, a completely different issue can be requested by HQ. This happened when the miners were freed, I think they restarted the paper at about 10pm.
-Lifestyle sections are printed through the week and inserted on site after the issue is printed on the press. They begin printing travel/ auto sections as early as monday for the Saturday papers.
- A paper cost $1. This is the cost of producing the puppy. You actually buy a paper at cost. They run on the ads.
- Seen those little post it notes on the front of the paper? It costs more to have one of those than a full colour page ad inside.
I work for the company that sells the post press newspaper equipment. Ill be at Fairfax and News Ltd later today.
