I wouldn't be surprised .
Most CEOs only stay 3-5 yrs in a job & move on .
If News conceded to pay what Smith & co were asking(maybe with 2 new teams for Fox on a Sat night) it could have been if Smith was ready to move on .
He could have been, & this just sped it up .

As for the nutters who think that after what the ARLC went through to get Out of NEWs LTds grip ,& now are suddenly going to drop to their knees again .
Words cannot describe the utter stupidity of that line of thinking .

Smith was probably always going once the rights deals were finalised, but both Smith and the ARLC probably came to the conclusion that News would drag it out for another 2.5yrs with Smith there and neither wanted to wait that long.

Just sat through fox sports news, how f**king painful. Jimmy Smith and Peter Badel running out the party line, and suggesting Mark Coyne and Brian Johnstone as CEO candidates because they have RL background. FFS this is going to be painful until someone is appointed, and the tv deal is finalised

This is already part of the news ltd strategy.

Grant when asked on the new ceo said something along the lines of (i don't have the exact quote sorry)- we've always put in systems in place to have the next CEO come from within, but we are happy with the guys in our current set up doing the job they are doing and we don't want to weaken those areas. We will conduct a worldwide search for the guy who is right for the goals we want to achieve and we will not rush the decision.

Now news ltd are only quoted the 1st line, and are championing greenberg. They are trying to write the narrative that smith was a huge failure because he was not australia and was not rugby league person. So when they announce a new ceo who's a successful business men from overseas, news ltd will continue their attacks, say the arlc is making the same mistakes as last time ( those mistakes that cost the news ltd money) and that they went back on their word on promoting someone from within(even though the arlc have said they are looking worldwide for the right person)

Not sure the 3 year tenure argument is correct for most successful CEO's tbh. Forbes reckons its 9.7 years.
I am surprised he didn't hang around for the glory for the deal, or if its going pear shaped to be the fall guy for the ARLC. Very strange timing, unless he has been offered a job he couldn't refuse or was totally peed off with the commission.

Or the alternative is to have a CEO who's got a great relationship with news ltd, and sell the entire rights to the game for $500 million over 6 years while also letting news ltd have almost comolete control over the game

If the bold is true you should care about the AFL deal. The AFL want every kid playing RL to play their sport and the more money they get the more money they are able to devote to achieving that goal, especially if the financial gap between the two sports keeps increasing. Do you get that? AFL dominates a lot of the country, the more money they get the harder it will be for the NRL to grow.

The AFL has been in a superior position to RL for 15 - 20 years in this country and despite untold millions in investment and a largely compliant media have not been able to shake RLs grip on NSW and QLD (which by the way make up 55% of Aus population). History is such a tough force to crack (and often overlooked as a factor in the embedded habits of populations). They can keep throwing money at getting RL players to move accross to the dark side, but the power of this tradition (not to speak of the class factor which is also a hard factor to ignore) will mean that their gains will be minimal.
So yes it would be nice to have a small gap between the revenue both codes are generating but what is most important is just getting money in the bank. Smith delivered this (almost $1bill for half the games) which means that the future of the game can be sured up.
Just think of the advantages we have in the pacific region where we only need minimal gains and in places like Victoria (again only minimal gains needed) to ensure that our game continues to be a force in this region (not just this country). The AFL have the distinct disadvantage of fighting as the local game in an increasingly global world. We have the luxury of being able to play a long term game (moreso than Aussie Rules anyway).

And you'd be crazy or very very myopic to think that AFL has not grown significantly in those 15 years across the country. NRL has grown as well in that time and is more than holding its own in its strongholds but growth in other areas is questionable if it is matching. Take a look at numbers for the VicNRL against numbers for AFL in NSW. With the games new money in the last deal we are starting to readdress this but don't think for a minute having more resources than your competitor isn't important in this battle.

Smith was hired to modernise & upskill the games administration & governance, and get the games finances in order, he was always going to make a lot of enemies doing that, that's why it was never going to be a long tenure. The next guy can be the diplomat.
