As much as I'm a balmain supporter, The first 30 years of the competition saw a majority of the games greats coming from the Balmain/Glebe/Sydney area. The Western Suburbs was a strong Rugby Union area for quite some time longer than in the rest of Sydney, which prevented the Magpies from getting a great deal of the quality players. Then Canterbury and to a lesser extent, Parramatta, entered the comp and took more away from Wests area. Just as Wests were starting to make progress and become successful in the 50's and 60's, Penrith entered the comp, and again, started dipping into the Magpies territory.TV Ted Ellery said:Wests - 17 Wooden Spoons and a +50% win ratio against only Adelaide, Western Reds, Gold Coast, University, Annandale, Parra, Penny Panthers, Norths and Sth Qld...a proud bunch.
Balmain enjoyed a 58% win ratio against your mob..
The games expansion damaged Wests.
Over the same period of time Balmain, Annandale and Glebe were fighting over one small area, and over time Glebe and Annandale left, leaving Balmain with more area to get players from.
Wests poor record and Balmains good record has a lot to do with those few simple factors.
All things told, Wests did pretty damn well with what they had, their record is not too dissimilar to that of Norths, who were in a much better situation in regards to player availability and expansion.
