they've started adding players to the train on squad 2 weeks ago....if hurrell was going to be selected by the kiwis surely he would have been added to the train on squad when all the warriors players got added...

and he was'nt...

Konrad said he wanted to play for tonga at this World Cup and then play for the kiwis afterwards.

As crazy as that sounds

"I want to go to the World Cup and play, I don't want to go there just to be the 18th man or just be in the squad,'' Hurrell told Fairfax NZ.

"I want to represent my country and the Tongan community in it. After that, if I play hard I will hopefully get a chance to play for the Kiwis.''

Thing is, hurrell is an actual Tongan, not a heritage player with links to nz as well. He has only been in nz for 4-5 years as a result of a school sporting contract. I don't know why he wants to play for nz.

Maybe he doesn't want to have to wait 2-3 years before he next gets a chance to play at international level?
If I was a genuine Tongan player then I'd choose to play for Tonga at the WC and then switch to NZ if I wanted more regular international games.

New Zealand Warriors outside back Glen Fisiiahi thought his season was over after a pectoral injury in July, but he now has a chance of representing Tonga at next month's rugby league World Cup.

The 23-year-old has been included in a 33-man preliminary train-on squad.

This indicates team management are confident the talented fullback/wing will be available for selection when the 24-man tour party is named after the October 6 NRL grand final.

Fisiiahi was limited to just 11 games for the Warriors in 2013 and last played against the Wests Tigers on July 19.

He is highly regarded by coach Charlie Tonga who selected him at fullback for the April test match for Tonga's comprehensive 36-4 victory over Samoa in Sydney. The game was the first instalment of an annual clash to coincide with the Anzac Test between the Kiwis and Kangaroos.

Fisiiahi is one of six Warriors players named in the initial group alongside Konrad Hurrell, rookie wing Ngani Laumape, Sebastine Ikahihifo and under-20s stars David Fusitua and Siliva Havili.

The team features two former Kiwis internationals - Parramatta front rower Fuifui Moimoi and second rower Sika Manu.

Centre Willie Tonga and back rower Anthony Tupou also have State of Origin and test experience.

The only players unavailable so far are NSW and former Kangaroos forward Tony Williams and Brisbane Broncos prop David Hala.

The squad will be revised as teams bow out of the NRL finals series although former Kangaroos prop Brent Kite, who will play for Manly against South Sydney in Friday's preliminary final, has already been confirmed as skipper.

Tonga train-on squad: Brent Kite (Manly Sea Eagles), Sosaia Feki (Cronulla Sharks), Nesiasi Mataitonga (Cronulla Sharks), Pat Politoni (Cronulla Sharks), Anthony Tupou (Cronulla Sharks), Mahe Fonua (Melbourne Storm), Siosaia Vave (Melbourne Storm), Glen Fisiiahi (NZ Warriors), David Fusitua (NZ Warriors), Siliva Havili (NZ Warriors), Konrad Hurrell (NZ Warriors), Sebastine Ikahihifo (NZ Warriors), Ngani Laumape (NZ Warriors), Siuatonga Likiliki (Newcastle Knights), Jason Taumololo (North Queensland Cowboys), Taniela Lasaolo (Parramatta Eels), Fuifui Moimoi (Parramatta Eels), Kelepi Tanginoa (Parramatta Eels), Peni Terepo (Parramatta Eels), Willie Tonga (Parramatta Eels), Vai Toutai (Parramatta Eels), Sika Manu (Penrith Panthers), Daniel Foster (Penrith Panthers), Atelea Vea (St George Illawarra Dragons), Samsoni Langi (Sydney Roosters), Ben Murdoch-Masila (Wests Tigers), Etu Uaisele (Wyong Roos - NSW), Ukuma Ta'i (Huddersfield Giants), Mickey Paea (Hull KR), Willie Manu (St Helens), Epalahame Lauaki (Wigan Warriors), Sydney Havea (Haakame Broncos - Tonga), Daniel Kilioni (Havelu Bulldogs - Tonga).

Updated squad with super league players and two players from tonga domestic comp.

Might want the chance to win some silverware?

I can't cop that as an excuse. I wouldn't want to play for any country other than Australia. Hurrell has no links to any country other than tonga, why wouldn't he want to represent his country?

This is definately a massive issue which needs to be sorted out!

Doesn't that then mean that any Kiwi could play Origin if selected, coz he'd still then be able to play for NZ as long as he hasn't played for Australia??

Yes, but NSW & Qld are precluded from picking them due to ARL rules, the players would not be doing anything wrong, nor would NZ.
But let's leave Origin out of it, as an OT subject.

Because a lot of players care more about their own personal glory than representing their country. As it is now, representing NZ is a bigger achievement in the players' eyes than representing Tonga. It's the same reason why players will use the residency rule. As you said you wouldn't play for any other country than Australia, but players like Fien and Greenshields have once they knew they were no chance of representing Australia.

If Hurrell was born in NZ and his heritage was from Tonga I'd understand. But I hate this residency rule.

get him selected then...

Tonga have approached I have heard.
However I think he is decided against it or his manager has

Remember he is still at high schol as well, probably sitting exams.

He will probably play Junior Kiwis then start pre-season training withe Warriors NRL squad.

With guys like Tuingvave, Godinet playing in World cup (actually heaps of Warriors squad).
Lolohea could really put in work in NZ, to overtake these guys

That pack is as good as any other in the comp.. but from all the evidence from Tonga in the past it's the discipline that will let them down.

What generation Australian are you? Its not a simple scenario for everyone

Me, Im a 2nd gen Australian with Scottish/English grand parents on my mums side and Welsh/Norwegian on my dads. If I was a professional RL player with zero chance of playing for Oz, Id be more than stoked to get a chance playing in the WC for any 4 of the countries Id be eligible for

This is definately a massive issue which needs to be sorted out!

I think we can all agree on this

No Feleti ?

If Uate is available for Fiji, Mateo should be available for Tonga.
