i'd like to think he'd be named sole captain....but i think henry will opt for the group leadership like the storms this season.
Id prefer the 1 sole captain though and tonguey or thommo would be excellant candidates.

Thommo is Hommo!
he is hot and cold, he doesn't seem to talk it up on field and could be a bench player next year!!! I cant believe that people would consider him!

After the game in Cronulla, (I think it was round 26) I asked Thommo and Tonguey seperately if they'd accept the captaincy should it be offered to them. Tonguey said it would be an honour and he'd love to do it, whilst Thommo said he didn't think he'd even be considered over Tonguey. The were both unsure as to what the new coach would do. For mine it's a no-brainer, Alan Tongue is the heart and sole of the Raiders now, and he should get the job. However, as Macko8 stated, I fear that Niel Henry will opt for that touchy-feely-bullsh*t-group-captain thing as well...

Guys can we do a petition and send it in to the raiders stating we want tonguey as sole captain???

I think the idea of three captains is very sensible for a number of reasons.

First of all Tonguey is not a natural media person. The job of being a captain in the NRL will involve a lot of media and being the public face of the club. Whilst I think that Tonguey is the perfect choice as an on field leader I am not sure he would want to take responsibility for all of that stuff as well.

Also being the captain of the Raiders has extra responsibilities to that of another club. There is obviously the Canberra media to work with but also we are in a strange position where we seem to be a "Sydney team" when it suits the NRL. Therefore if there are any promotions etc to do with the game, they are normally held in Sydney and as a "NSW club" we are expected to be involved. One of the reasons that Simon Woolford stepped down at the end of last year was the extra trips to Sydney.

Also I think it has been well stated that Tonguey is not a player with great natural ability. Therefore he needs to be at his absolute best every week or he will quickly fall away. So lets not increase the pressure even more.

The final reason why three captains is a good idea is that we have a very young team next season and a developing team. A lot of guys are going to be asked to step up next year and those that do will be able to be part of hopefully what will be a very successful side going forward. Lets try a few and see which player can step up as the leader for that period.

Have you seen Tongue in an interview?? He is actually quiet eloquent, he speaks well and is IMO perfect for the job he has been our most consistent player over the last 3 years

Damn you Rock, damn you!! My eyes lit up when I saw this thread!

Clearly with the loss of all the experience we have suffered this year, I can see why Henry and co. would consider the idea of co-captains - and all three being mentioned (Tongue, Thommo and Withers) are good candidates. Personally however it's not my preferred option - I prefer one leader, making the decisions - and it's not as if the others don't have input anyway.

Tongue would walk into the captaincy in a perfect world

Oh you bloody idiot. Worst thread ever.

IMHO, I cant see the point in rotating the captaincy. Either you're a leader or you're not.

except it has already been announced that he is the public face of the club for next season... (it was in the canberra times last week or the week before, and you may also notice that he is also plastered all over the membership renewal forms)

and Mullins, you are a twat. Fancy giving a player like Thommo, who the players have massive respect for, and who has basically been the heart and soul of our props for the past 2 seasons sh*t. give yourself an uppercut.

I hate all this AFL inspired sh*te like joint captains and refering to the team as the 'playing group' and would be pissed if we adopted it.

Here our some reasons why Tonguey should be our 'sole' captain

1. He's an 80 minute player who's efforts on the field and on the training park are an inspiratiion to his teamates who all love and respect the guy.

2. He's also a role model off the field. A family man who's studying for a life after football. He's also one guy who you know would never be involved in any nightclub type activities that will bring the club into disrepute.

3. He's easily the most articulate guy at the club and comes across as being very geniune and sincere.

Thommo is an absolute champ.
The same can't be said about Mullins or his devotee y2k.

I am not denying that Tonguey speaks well and can represent the club well. It is just that I am not sure that he is the sort of bloke that would want to do ALL the interviews and other captaincy duties. I just think that sharing it around is fair enough.

Have to pick you up on the last 3 years quote. In 2004 he hardly played a game as injured all year. In 2005 he was a very good player off the bench and then in 2006 he made the big step to be one of the top players in the NRL.

Don't get me wrong, I love Tonguey and if he and the club thinks that he should be the sole man for the job, I will be rapt, it is just that unlike some others on this forum, I would be just as happy if they want to share it around.

I admit my passion for tongue to be skipper influenced my Thommo comments. I think he is an ok player but certaintly not our best and IMO is in danger of loosing his FGS if he doesnt step up next year that is all...

I dont exactly know why everyone thinks tongueys a saint...dont get me wrong the bloke has hit form these past 2 seasons and makes 40 odd tackles a game, and has grown with confidence, but what the hell is wrong with thommo??Remember he was named player of the year alongside Josh Miller in 2005??He would do equally as good a job as tongue if he was elected captain.
He dropped off a bit this year but he always remained consistent.

I just dont think naming one sole captain for next season will be as effective as naming the likes of a 3 man show.thats my opinion.
