Tooheys Challenge

Super League champions St Helens are keen to participate in the NRL’s mooted new pre-season tournament if the price and timing are right, with the majority of Australian clubs also expected to back the latest addition to the calendar.

The Herald revealed on Wednesday that Rugby League Central is keen for teams to play for points and prizemoney before the competition proper begins for the first time since the Tooheys Challenge ran in the early 1990s. The initiative will be officially unveiled at the announcement of the 2023 NRL draw, which could take place as soon as next week.

The final details are still being worked through, but one of the possibilities is for all teams to be involved in two tournament matches during the traditional trial period.
The NRL has invited St Helens to participate in two games in Sydney, one of which would be against Australian premiers Penrith, in a fresh twist to the traditional World Club Challenge concept.

St Helens officials declined to comment on the development, but sources with knowledge of the situation told the Herald the English powerhouse is open to participating. NRL clubs are still digesting the idea, but are expected to also fall in line once further details are conveyed.
“All the clubs are supportive of a bit more structure around the pre-season,” said South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly.

“Some of the things the NRL did last year around broadcast and the playing of the pre-season was a real step forward.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any information about what this new pre-season competition looks like, but I think instinctively that anything that adds a bit more rigour to the pre-season will be well-supported.”

Solly has a firm understanding of the game in both hemispheres given he was the boss of the Super League competition before taking on the Rabbitohs role. He believes it a prudent move to incorporate the best English clubs.

“St Helens are a proud club,” Solly said. “[Chairman] Eamonn McManus and [CEO] Mike Rush are outstanding operators and have done a wonderful job building a strong club on and off the field.

“They would be a wonderful addition to any pre-season competition in 2023.”
The Herald spoke to several other NRL powerbrokers, who declined to go on the record until they had received further details. However, they were open to commercialising the trial period in a manner similar to the AFL’s NAB Cup.

“It’s well worth investigating,” one club boss said. “We already played a couple of trial games every year as it is, so it probably won’t be too different.”

Next season, on the back of the World Cup, will be one of the longest yet. There is the prospect of not only a pre-season tournament but also a competition game in the United States, the All Stars fixture and an extended season that goes for 27 rounds.
St George Illawarra star Zac Lomax, an attendee at a press conference promoting the Sonny Bill Williams-Mark Hunt fight on Thursday, said it was important any new additions to the calendar didn’t overburden the players.
“At the end of the day, the season is probably long enough,” Lomax said.

“It feels like the off-season goes that quick. The pre-season and the season is long enough as it is, it takes a toll on your body, let me tell you.”

Sometimes players can be whiny bastards but Im with them on this one.

A good 100 players or so (our best at that) will only start preseason training on the 9th of January after a big 2022. The season starts early March. To squeeze a preseason tournament into an already short preseason Im deeply questioning.
If teams have the options to not field their strongest side, I'd say a tentative yes although Im not a big fan of the idea. If they have to put a percentage of their best side in, absolutely not.

Would just take the place of trials but I guess it could give shit teams a chance to feel good about themselves

Pre-season tournaments are a relic of a by gone era.

The calendar is to crowded for this to be truly viable.

And this journo keeps referencing the AFL NAB Cup.

That hasn't been a thing for a decade!

Yeah but clubs would play trials anyway, coaches will decide what players get a run

If it is to be televised, and the NRL are asking broadcasters for more money, odds on the broadcasters will ask for first string players to be available to increase the chances of people wanting to watch. When we talk about fatigue for our elite players, look at players like Tedesco, Cleary and Munster. They played in most of their respective teams games and will have clocked up 30+ games each in 2022 when you include trials and all rep games that they may play.

Does anyone think that then expecting any of those players, who won't finish playing till late November 2022, will be up to playing in a pre-season competition in February?

Sorry but its just a dumb idea, especially when you consider the NRL and the IRL are looking at turning the October-November period of each year into a dedicated window for international league matches in future years. Then adding a pre-season comp on top of that is just plain stupid.

Anything that brings in cash is worth discussing, Key is the details

We're going to kill these guys if we We're expected them to play February through November every year.

And before any dingbat says 'they only play 80 minutes a week for hundreds of $$, I work 96 hours a week lifting fridges for $2.50 an hour', f**k off.

It will get like other sports where you rest guys in some games

The biggest question about pre season comps is this: does anybody, including the players, really care if their team wins? I say No. So what's the point?

How many games do soccer players play at the elite level (including champions league etc)

it won’t be full squads involved anyway

You're comparing a collision sport to an aerobic sport. MLB play 162 games in their season plus post season, therefore soccer players should play more?

You're also comparing a true global sport with a sport who has a limited player pool. You dilute the talent playing and you dilute the quality and no one will watch.

Great idea in theory but in practice not so, otherwise it would already be done.

Just play the 9s. It's fun to watch. No one expects the best players. Enough stars. Can invite some English/French teams.

Be even better if it was International 9s.
Cities are looking for sports events to invest in. Nines in Feb is a great tourism opportunity for cities. If NRL cant sell the Nines every year they aren't very good salesmen! $1mill hosting fee, 20k plus crowd target, 1 night 2 days of TV coverage to sell.

start the NRLW season in Jan for content for streaming to maintain subs. Allstars, WCC, Nines in Feb .
Dont really need a pre season cup, which as said is meaningless and most sports have ditched.
IRL until last weekend in Nov. Gives players Dec off back to pre season Jan, games and events Feb, season proper March. NRLW filling the void.

Lets be honest all this is just a desperate attempt to paper over the monumental TV deal f**k up. We should have gone to open tender, got $500mill plus a year and we wouldnt need to be dreaming up how we create more content for more $'s.

While not caring, Still good to have the footy on while having a BBQ. So TV ratings will be ok

If it gets 10k to these games instead of 3k, While making a small profit for the game that is a win.

NBA Summer League springs to mind
