I enjoyed most of those mentioned, but my favourite war or anti-war movie is a Japanese animation called "Grave of the fireflies", simply awesome.

I would also mention the Korean movie "The Brother of War" re the Korean War was top notch.

was trying to think of the name of it earlier to put it in my hon mentions. really enjoyed it.

disgusted at the lack of schindlers list in any lists. zero taste, any of you!
I dont consider Schindlers List to be a war movie. Its clearly more of a drama...

Thanks, I have been trying to remember the name of that Korean movie, had been recommended to me but could never remember it's name.

Really hard to pick a top 5, so many deserve a mention, but agree most of the ones mentioned here are well and truly a cut above.

No worries...but...not sure what happened there, but it should read "the brotherhood of war"

that's like saying Full Metal Jacket isn't a war movie... it's an action/drama. :?

define war movie? Schindlers List takes place during WWII... directly relates the themes that concern the war... and doesn't at all deviate from it's focus on the war? just because soldiers arn't out there blowing limbs off (although there is plenty of bloodshed in schindlers list, too)... doesn't mean it isn't, in every way possible, a war movie.

i really can't understand the logic here... movies like lord of the rings are quite obviously not war movies, although they have a few battles in them... but a movie that relates directly to almost every theme during one of the major world wars is most definitely a war movie. it's based on a true war story!!

I have been told by several veterans that for a true representation of the Vietnam War you cannot go past "The Odd Angry Shot"

No it's not. FMJ was a movie about soldiers...preparing for and going to war.

What the Nazis did to the Jews in occupied Europe wasn't war, it was genocide. And in essence it was a movie about one man's struggle to do the right thing and make a difference whern surrounded by such evil.

Look, im sure that under a loose association it can be considered a war movie but it is IMO first and foremost a drama/biographical piece. The Pianist fall into the same category for me.

Ive never heard one movie critic mention Schindler's List when talking about their favourite war movies, which im sure they would if they considered it a war movie because its a masterpiece.
