Toronto Gone?

I think most would agree with Rovers chairman Mark Campbell describing clubs as acting in self interest.

This decision is a kick in the nuts for those of us that support and want our great game to grow. SL had a free kick with Toronto, a team fully paid for and the potential of making inroads in the richest sporting market in the world and they said "no thanks" face slapping emoji

It's been said often over the last few days but its so true. Rugby league never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

well not really true at all. Given they have just now voted to have a 12 club comp next year clubs will get less grant than if toronto was allowed back in so they have in fact cost themselves funding with this decision. How does that make them self interested?

Ive been following them on social media and their recent posts have suggested they've wound up business for good, I get their not going to be in any competition at this stage but gee its one of the great shames for a club thats gained such a popularity, not just in Canada but around the world. You see people with the hats and jumpers.

Part of me is not surprised, given the Covid situation and of course Rugby League officials shooting themselves in the foot

That club generated so much interest on the field and off the field too, an average crowd thats bigger than clubs in the UK

I just hope, really HOPE, that this doesn't completely destroy the game in Northern America.

If someone has the sense to create a Northern America Super League, or whatever to continue to grow up there, it'll be great but again nothing surprises me with Rugby League.

Without seeing the proposal the new potential owner put forward how do you know officials "shot themselves in the foot"? The first attempt at a business case submission was obviously so poor that they gave him another shot to improve it and he still couldn't put forward something that dissuaded 75% of the voters from thinking it was unviable. If he was committed why not fund them in the next division and rebuild for promotion next year? Get some runs on the board, convince everyone they are going to screw it up like the last owner and come back stronger than before.

Covid basically ended any trans Atlantic comp strategy for the ESL

Toronto and Ottawa now both not playing

Here's hoping the Wolfpack aren't gone.

Brain McDermott called it the biggest mistake the game has ever made and I'd agree 100% . Without being overally dramatic, imo this was the most important vote since the Northern rule changes in the 1800's. Both had the potential to change the future of the game and both times the vote went against league.

I'm sure if you looked at the business plans for Apple you could find some numbers that are sketchy, but if they offered you free shares would you say no ? Of course not. That's literally what super league did. A free team costing them nothing in north America and they said no. If Perth red and others don't think the clubs voted for self preservation they are kidding themselves. This vote was selfish and short sighted. Any other major sporting completion in the world ( the EPL, LA Liga, Top 14, NRL...etc ) would kill for the same opportunity, a fully funded north American team in their competition, yet somehow, someway the super league found a way to say No ! Heck ! Even if the wolfpack go bust after 1 season what did it cost the SL ? Nothing ! Its a free kick into the richest sporting marked in the world.

Brain McDermott also said this decision will turn people off the super league. I'm one of them, couldn't give a rats what happens over there now.

Its interesting seeing these comments from everyone

Exactly the same thoughts and feelings

In 1997-99 when

Illawarra, Wests, Norths, Souths, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, Crushers were kicked out and a lesser extent St George and Balmain

And again a few years ago when Souths and Cronulla were excluded from the NRLW

Did read that a consortium are looking to take over Wolfpack, which could see them try and re-enter the Championship.

Rubbish, if a N American rugby team playing in a European comp. was viable the PRO 14 would have had a team in by now. RU think that a N American league is the way to go, and I agree with them, if N Americans want to play RL let them set up their own league. If there aren't enough RL supporters in N America with money, then that's their problem. Tough.

Best get crusaders and raiders out of the super league then.

Another French club, London and a welsh club in SL would be far more valuable long term to rugby league in northern hemisphere than some unsustainable nth American club with no infrastructure surviving only on the whim of an owner.
