Torres transfer to Chelsea for £50 mill

Liverpool have rejected a written transfer request from Spain international striker Fernando Torres.

The Anfield club have already turned down a bid from Chelsea - thought to be about £35m-40m - for the 26-year-old.

"He's under a long-term contract. We expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool and its fans when he signed the agreement," said the Reds.

Earlier, Liverpool announced they had agreed a deal to sign Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez from Ajax for £23m.

But Suarez's transfer did not stop Torres from asking to leave Liverpool just hours after the Ajax and the Reds confirmed a deal had been agreed for the Uruguayan.

"Fernando Torres has submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool," added the Reds statement.
Torres has had a indifferent season, scoring nine goals in 26 games but has recently looked revitalised under new boss Kenny Dalglish, scoring three goals in his last four games.

The Spaniard's inconsistent start to the campaign comes after a knee injury, which also hampered him at the World Cup in South Africa last summer.

Although he scored twice in the Reds' 2-0 win over Chelsea in November, Torres looked a forlorn figure under previous Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson.

Liverpool moved up to seventh in the Premier League table following their 1-0 victory over Fulham on Wednesday, but they still face a fight to qualify for the Champions League next season, with Chelsea nine points ahead of them in fourth spot.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti refused to talk about Torres but said he is happy that "the club are trying to do everything they can to improve the squad".

With the transfer window open until 2300 GMT on Monday, there is still time for the Blues to increase their offer for the Spaniard should they wish.

Ancelotti said: "I don't want to speak about this, you will have to ask the club. He is not my player and I have to have respect for Liverpool.
"I'm not surprised, because I know very well what the club is doing now. I am happy because the club is doing a fantastic job in this transfer market."

Although Ancelotti's team have failed to fully replicate their form of last term where they won the Premier League title, they are still in the Champions League and are 10 points behind league leaders Manchester United.

Ancelotti has previously hinted that he wanted to bring in new players to bolster an ageing squad stretched by injuries this season.
And with the club close to signing Benfica defender David Luiz, the bid for Torres shows that Chelsea are still prepared to use their financial muscle to boost their domestic and European ambitions.

Explains the Suarez transfer more I guess.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Italy. He'll never play for Man U or Real Madrid and I doubt Liverpool would sell him to Chelsea which realisticaly, if you go down those guidelines, only leaves Barcelona (David Villa) Inter (Eto'o, Milito and now Pazzini) and Milan with Bayern linked as a smokey but I doubt they'd fork out money in the 40m range.

I wonder if Atletico do sell Forlan now if they would throw a bid in for him in the summer? Home is probably where he needs to be. Torres and Agüero would be sweet. No Champions League football would probably deter him though.

I don't think going back to Atletico does anything for him. From what I'm gathering, he's wanting to move to Chelsea for a better chance at winning trophies. Given the current state of La Liga, going back to Spain doesn't achieve that (since as you pointed out, Real and Barca are probably out of the picture). Plus Atletico probably couldn't afford what Liverpool would be asking.

City would have been the obvious candidates but they just splashed the cash on Dzeko.

He still has something like 4 - 5 years left on his contract so he wont leave for anything less than 50 million pounds, possibly 60 million and the only clubs that can really afford that are City and Chelsea. I Still doubt he will leave and if he does I will have to change my picture, if he moves to Chelsea he will be playing as an understudy to Drogba probably, which I doubt he will want.

Kenny will be able to talk him out of the transfer anyway.

In saying that I would definitely accept a bid of 50 million for him.

He aint going anywhere this transfer request is a load of rubbish i wouldnt be surprised if this was set up in trying to get the owners to hurry up an invest in a transfer before the window closes as the team needs new players to come in. The luiz suarez deal has been on the up an down for weeks an it looked like the owners werent going to coff up the cash to bring him in. Lfc have pulled a sneaky one on the owners what better way to do it than to threaten them with a transfer request from one of their top players an the result luiz suarez signing for 22.5 million.

Chelsea fans can keep dreaming he aint leaving a big club to join a small one.

He has a £50m buyout clause... so he'll go for that amount you'd imagine.

Only really two candidates for his signature, City and Chelsea, with the latter being the most likely I reckon. City have already offloaded one injury prone striker, can't see us getting another one!

That is one of the most moronic things I have ever read.

They are a small club compared to the mancs and liverpool there small lol there not even the biggest club in london arsenal and spurs are the big 2 and chelsea can fight the other spot with west ham:lol:.

Dont think Italian clubs could afford 50 million for him

Not sure how interested Milan would be considering they'll probably make the Zlatan transfer permanent at the end of this season (and shell out something like 24 mill).

Chelsea are thought to be preparing a second bid for the Spaniard, after Liverpool rejected their offer, believed to be £35m plus Daniel Sturridge. There are some suggestions that a new offer could include Nicolas Anelka as a makeweight.

He is believed to have a release clause in his contract, enabling him to move for £50m if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League. They are highly unlikely to do so.

35 mill and Sturridge seems like a decent offer.

Unless Liverpool feel that they could wait at the end of the season and have someone activate the CL transfer clause. Would be a bit of a risk considering Torres' sketchy health in recent times.

I think if Chelsea come in with a bid of £40-50 million for Torres, then we must accept. His value will drastically drop in the next few seasons. We will have enough money to rebuild and buy young players that are aligned with the club's renewed attacking philosophy.

Besides, I am not too sure if Torres+Suarez striking partnership would be very effective unless Suarez plays in the current Maxi position. However, we've spent big money on Suarez and I believe sticking him out on the left wing isn't the way to go. So without compromising the 4-5-1 formation, his most influential position would be Torres' current spot.

It has also been confirmed that there is no buyout clause in place at the moment. However I do believe we will accept a £50 million bid.

The whole transfer release clause is a bit confusing. The link I provided above states that it comes into effect if Liverpool don't qualify for the Champions league, and in other places I've read that it doesn't exist at all.

He wont be allowed to leave until January, and a bid of 45 - 50 mil will be required, which i will be extremely happy with or even 40 mil + sturridge. I doubt he would go to Italy.
