Stunning comeback - Vodafone Junior Warriors 28, Penrith 30

Penrith scored a converted try in the 77th minute to stop a 12-man Vodafone Junior Warriors completing what would have been an astonishing comeback win in tonight’s 21st-round NYC clash against Penrith at CUA Stadium.

After captain Elijah Taylor opened the scoring in the fourth minute, the Vodafone Junior Warriors yielded five tries to trail 4-24 at halftime.

But within 13 minutes of the second spell starting, they’d totally transformed the contest, storming back to 22-24 on the back of tries from Shaun Johnson, Rusty Bristow and James Gavet.

Only minutes after his try, Gavet was ordered off after what appeared to be a relatively innocuous skirmish involving most of the players from both sides.

However, his dismissal had little effect on the Vodafone Junior Warriors.
They continued to build pressure and in the 70th minute Sione Lousi’s clever flick pass created space for the prolific Bill Tupou to score wide out, Johnson converting superbly from the touchline to cap an amazing recovery giving the side a 28-24 lead.

But with just three minutes left the young Panthers concocted a reply of their own to level the scores at 28-28 and then celebrated wildly as standoff Stirling Siejka converted brilliantly from wide out for a 30-28 lead.

It wasn’t a safe advantage, though, and it looked anything but when Vodafone Junior Warriors fullback Jason Cook scorched 70 metres downfield after fielding a kick just short of his line.

But as he got up to play the ball Cook was ruled to have lost possession when a penalty might have been awarded for interference. That was to be the last chance.

20s final’s hopes fade

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side have suffered a 30-22 defeat at the hands of Newcastle Knights on Saturday afternoon at Energy Australia Stadium.

The Roosters went into the half time break down 24-4 leaving them with a mountainous task to get back in the game with 40 to go.

They started the second period in perfect fashion and found themselves 12 behind with 18 minutes to play.

The Knights spoiled any hint of a comeback with a converted try before former Knight Dane Cordner crossed in the final minute.

The loss leaves them lingering in second last position, six points clar of the Cronulla Sharks, and four wins out of an unlikely finals spot.

Young Broncos Move Into Top Four

THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have moved into the National Youth Competition top four after a 30-18 victory over the Raiders in Canberra today.

A try to big prop Dunamis Lui (pictured) on the siren capped off the win, which was built through a strong second-half display.

A win by competition leaders Manly over Wests Tigers on Monday night will leave the Broncos - who lost their first five games - in the top four with five matches remaining.

Down 6-0 at the break, it took the Broncos just three minutes to tie it up.

Captain Guy Ford twisted his way over and Corey Norman kicked the goal for 6-all.

Seven minutes later Todd Murphy finished off a break to put the Broncos in front for the first time, Norman’s goal making it 12-6.

The Raiders looked like scoring in the 58th minute but were called back for a forward pass.

The Broncos took a stranglehold on the game in the 67th minute when Ben Hunt found a gaping hole in the defensive line and strolled over near the posts.

Norman again converted and it was 18-6.

On the next set the Broncos put the match on ice when Kurt Baptiste grubbered through and Jharal Yow Yeh picked up the scraps for a try.

Norman again added two points and it was 24-6.

But the Raiders would not let up, putting on two tries in the 73rd and 76th minutes through Justin Toomey-White and Hayden Hodge to set up a big finish.

Ben Hunt missed what looked an easy field goal shot with two minutes left that would have ended the game, but Lui’s try on the bell topped off the win.

In the first half, the Broncos made a good early break with Dane Gagai brought down short of the line.

He didn’t play the ball properly though, which was costly when the Raiders went 70 metres downfield on the next set for fullback Hodge to score a long-range try.

Five-eighth James Smart knocked over the conversion for 6-0 after 13 minutes.

Canberra had numerous opportunities to score with the majority of the possession in the rest of the first half, but somehow the Broncos managed to hang on.

The launched a last-ditch effort for points in the final minutes of the half but couldn’t breach the Raiders’ line, leaving it at 6-0.

Sharks 24 – Eels 18 – Full Time in Toyota Cup

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels left their run too late in the Toyota Cup, losing 24-18 to the Sharks at Toyota Stadium.

The Eels fought their way back from a 22 point deficit to remain in the hunt heading into the final ten minutes, only to be undone by a passionate defensive effort from the last-placed Sharks.

The win was just the Sharks fourth of the season – and their first since round five – bringing down the curtain on a 13 week winless streak.

The successful return of prop Mitchel Johnson from appendicitis was the only highlight to come for the Eels in a first half that saw them slump to trail 22-nil by the break.

Sharks captain Luke Latham was everywhere for the home side in the opening stanza, laying the platform for halfback Chad Townsend to score and convert for a six-nil lead after 19 minutes.

They’d double the advantage five minutes later, prop Ahmad Allaz barging over to score under the posts.

And when Latham again turned the tables on his former club, scoring the Sharks third try 12 minutes out from half time, the Eels were on the rack at 18-nil down.

Nothing was going right for the Eels, who lost fullback Nathan Gardner just before half time with a hamstring strain.

A further try to second rower Trent Grubb put the Sharks ahead by 22-nil at the break.

Needing to strike early and often in the second half, the Eels got the first part of the equation right when Boyd Brown burrowed over to open the scoring for the visitors.

TK Amosa’s conversion made it 22-6 after 47 minutes.

Rory Brien then crossed two minutes later and the contest was alive with the Eels trailing by less than two converted tries.

The Sharks defence then came to the fore, the Eels unable to draw closer despite having a wealth of possession inside the home side’s 20 metre zone.

A Townsend penalty goal put the Sharks 12 clear at 24-12 with five minutes left to play, however the Eels went the length of the field in two plays for Ryan Morgan to score.

It would prove the final score of the match, the Sharks holding on to take a deserved victory.

MANLY BEAT WESTS TIGERS 40-34 IN TOYOTA CUP CLASH

Wests Tigers forward Simon Dwyer returned to the Toyota Cup team for tonight's match against Manly at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Dwyer was named on the bench for the NRL team but will now start in the second-row in the Toyota Cup. Rhys Curran moves back to the interchange bench with Neccrom Areaiiti now the 18th man.

Wests Tigers had the first attacking opportunity in the opening minutes on the back of a penalty but a dropped ball 10 metres out from the Manly tryline allowed the visitors off the hook.

Manly prop James Cunningham was penalised in the sixth minute for holding down Woods too long in a tackle.

Wests Tigers went on the attack from the penalty and two plays later, prop Andrew Fifita crashed his way over to score for a 4-0 lead.

Full-back Jake Mullaney missed the conversion from 10 metres in on the quarter metre line.

A knock on by Manly winger Cameron Dyer in the 11th minute saw Wests Tigers win a scrum feed 25 metres out. A grubber kick on the last tackle by Wests Tigers half-back and captain Darren Nicholls went dead with a flying Mullaney following through.

Manly received a penalty on the second tackle from the re-start to take possession to 30 metres out from the Wests Tigers tryline. The Sea Eagles recieved another penalty two metres out from the line after an infringement by second-rower Jason Schirnack.

The pressure told when second-rower Darcy Lussick ran 10 metres and forced the ball down despite the presence of five-eighth Robert Lui, centre Joel Wisbey and hooker Jay Florimo. Half-back Daly Cherry-Evans converted the try to give Manly a 6-4 lead after 16 minutes.

Manly jumped to a 10-4 lead when the ball was spread left through three sets of hands for centre Kieran Foran to dive over untouched out wide in the 22nd minute. Cherry-Evans failed to convert the try.

Foran grabbed his second try when he dived on a grubber kick on the last tackle in the 29th minute. It came on the back of an intercept pass by Dyer from Nicholls a few plays earlier.

Cherry-Evans missed the conversion attempt from the sideline to leave the score at 14-4.

Manly extended their lead to 18-4 four minutes before half-time when lock and captain Jamie Buhrer stretched out after falling short in a tackle to score under the posts. Cherry-Evans converted the try for a 20-4 lead.

Wests Tigers hit back a minute before half-time when Mullaney fended off two players before putting the foot down to score from 10 metres out for a 20-8 scoreline. It came on the back of a repeat set after a smart chip kick by Nicholls in which Mullaney followed through to regain possession.
Mullaney converted the try to leave Wests Tigers trailing 20-10 at half-time.

2nd Half
There was a touch of 'Harlem Globetrotters' in the 48th minute when a break down the right flank saw winger Junior Roqica throw a pass over his shoulder to Lui without looking.Lui kicked the ball ahead but it went dead-ingoal.

Two minutes later, Wests Tigers were denied a try when winger Sama Sauvao scored but the final pass was ruled forward.

Wests Tigers were not denied when forward LeivahaPulu ran onto a flat pass from Lui to score out wide. Mullaney converted for a 20-16 scoreline.

Manly hit back two minutes later when the ball was shifted right for centre Blake Davies ran into a gap to score out wide. Cherry-Evans failed to convert the try for a 24-16 scoreline after 58 minutes.

Wests Tigers hit back to trail 24-20 when the ball was spread through Lui, Sauvao and Nicholls for centre Jake Clarke to score. Nicholls converted for a 24-22 scoreline.

Wests Tigers hit the lead again when Nicholls beat three defenders to score next to the posts. Mullaney converted the try for a 28-24 scoreline.

Manly drew level when second-rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves crashed out wide. Cherry-Evans converted for a 30-28 scoreline.

Wests Tigers then scored the try of the match when the ball travelled through several hands before winger Junior Roqica did well to beat two defenders to dive over in the corner. Mullaney converted the try for a 34-30 lead.

Wests Tigers then bombed a tryscoring opportunity when Andrew Fifita made a break before offloading five metres short of the line only to see the ball knocked on.

Nicholls was sent to the sin bin four minutes before full-time for a professional foul 10 metres from his tryline.
Manly capatilised on the extra space with prop Lama Tisi crossing near the posts for a 34-34 scoreline.
Cherry-Evans converted the try for a 36-34 lead with less than two minutes remaining.

A short kick-off from the re-start saw Manly hooker Liam Higgins race 40 metres downfield before being tackled by Lui. On the last tackle, Foran out a crossfield kick for winger David Sheehan to catch on the full to score in the corner to give Manly a 40-34 lead.

Cherry-Evans failed to convert to leave Manly with a 40-34 victory.
