Travel advice

Hey guys, I'm going on a holiday to Canada in just under a month and I was wondering if I could get some travel advice from those who have had the chance to travel before.

In particular is there anything you make sure to pack or things not to pack? What should I take on my carry on bag?

Just any general traveling tips would be sweet :)

7 weeks.

Might be going to Vegas for about a week also.

Yeah clothes I'm not so concerned about as I can always buy some there.

Oh another specific question is I don't want to carry much cash with me this time around. Will my VISA debit card work over there? Do I have to convert the money here first or does it transfer the currency automatically when I purchase over there?

For the plane, dress as if you are going to bed - very light and as confortable as possible, forget shoes for example, take slippers or sandles.

Don't worry about taking anything to read or listen to on the plane. Just try to get as much sleep as possible - west to east flying is hard in this respect.

If you are detouring to the US at any point, make you you have an ESTA visa waiver in advance.

Using a visa debit card over there in stages is close to the optimal solution. Currency is converted at a reasonable rate on the spot + a small fee.

Take any necessary medication in our carry on luggage along with your ipod etc.

Clothing wise - take clothes that match the season you are going in...if it summer then just take shorts and tees etc and don't take a lot.

Don't take heaps of pairs of shoes...waste of space in your luggage IMO.

I normally get a travelex card where you load aussie cash onto it and withdraw from any ATM...it is way cheaper using this card when paying ATM fees compared to other cards.

any eftpos card with Cirrus or Maestro on it will work over there in ATM's. Clothes are cheap as shit over there and with the exchange rate the way it is it's even better.

Thanks on the feedback guys.

Got my suitcases today (1 big one and a smaller carry on one) and was just wondering how to go about suitcase security. Do you guys padlock the zippers, wrap the suitcase in plastic like I just recently found out some people do or any other techniques?

Someone mentioned to me like these plastic things you tie up through the zippers then snap off the end of it so you have the id/number of that plastic thing, anyone know what that is all about?

Thanks.

Mate I bloody live in planes and have never had an issue with suitcase security, however, as medical costs are unbelievably high you should invest in a comprehensive insurance cover which will cover everything. Sounds like a waste but you don't want to have to spend any part of your journey freaking out about that sort of stuff.

No liquids in the cabin bag unless you buy something from Duty Free. Also when travelling by air in North America allow an extra hour before check-in because security lines are long, slow and frustrating.

Any & every thing else is cake. Anything to do with OS travel, time management & insurance are your two main priorities!
