Surely the Board can't be that stupid & incompetent to make 14 mistakes in not considering the better options! FMD....

I'd like to know how many other coaches they really considered. Was anyone other than Mary approached, contacted or interviewed? Or was it just a paper exercise of who might be available before deciding its easier to just reappoint Mary?

Soward wants full review into Dragons

Jamie Soward has stuck the boot into the Dragons, saying the club needs a top-to-toe evaluation.
Struggling St George Illawarra's impending review needs to be a top-to-toe analysis of the NRL club, former playmaker Jamie Soward believes.

The Dragons board is set to meet on Tuesday to begin a review of their 2019 season.

The Dragons were thumped 40-18 by Penrith on Friday - a result that leaves them 14th on the ladder with just six wins.

Dragons chief executive Brian Johnston has said the future of coach Paul McGregor won't be up for discussion as part of the review, but Soward feels every aspect of the club should be put under the microscope.

"The Dragons are a mess. It hurts me to say this ... they're just in a shambles," Soward told Macquarie Sports Radio.

"The internal review needs to go through the whole club from top to bottom regardless of your position."

A premiership winner with the Dragons in 2010, Soward fell out with then coach Steve Price in 2013 and left the club before finishing his NRL career at Penrith.

The Dragons have endured a season which began with Jack De Belin being stood down under the NRL's 'no-fault' policy before captain Gareth Widdop was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Despite those woes, Soward said there's no doubt the team shouldn't be scrapping at the bottom of the ladder with strugglers like Gold Coast.

"The Dragons have got a roster at the moment that should be a top four team - a top five team at worst - and they haven't been able to put the results on," Soward said.

"The thing for Dragons fans is, they haven't got any big recruits coming next year, this is their team next year.

"There's been some guys there that have been re-signed, held on to and put in the team that haven't improved. That's why they're currently 14th.

"They're in real danger of the Titans just jagging one or two games after some stars get rested going in and the Dragons not going well and they're in a fight for the spoon."

Johnno I think we all know that option 2 is the only feasible answer. Those Board meetings have far more important decisions to make, like Tim Tams or Mint Slices to go with the Cup of Tea!

Word from my trusted circle of friends is that the Board is about to terminate Marys contract and appoint Trent Barrett as our new head coach. Apparently this is likely to happen within the next two weeks; I certainly hope so.

What are your feelings about Barrett being appointed head coach?

After the Manly debacle, I'm not convinced about Barrett- Toovey would be my first pick but if he's not available, I'd go for a current or former assistant coach who has learnt off the best- Jason Ryles (learnt from Bellamy) to compete with Jason Demetriou (learnt from Bennett).

I am no great fan of Trent Barrett but I would happily take him if it meant Mary was shown the door now and we could at least hope for some improvement in 2020-21 rather than more of the same from Mary. Mary sets the bar so low that I don't think it would be difficult for any replacement to effect some improvement. Just think of a coach who picks the best form players every week in their best positions, watches the Canterbury Cup team whenever possible to gauge form and encourage fringe players and utilises the 4 man bench with some level of footy know-how or even with just some common sense.

Surely there's feelers going out to Demetriou. He's got to stand up and be counted at some stage. Why not with us?
I think Jason would love to coach St. George but while Johnston and the Board are still kidding themselves and mollycoddling McGregor, he won't come near the place.
McGregor shown the door and Demetriou given a clear mandate to re build the football team into a genuine premiership contender.
That's what needs to happen to get JD to come back.

At least if Barrett came dragons attack would be better not pass out the backs with no inside or decoy runners .if Paul can't coach the attack after 5 years its not going to happen or do the players just do there own thing no they are not playing for the coach he has lost the shed

More musings on our current misfortune...

From zero tackle website. Can't post link.
They say he’s safe, but after what appears to be another bottom eight finish for the Dragons, the drums are beating louder and louder for the sacking of Paul McGregor.

And despite a lack of quality coaches on the market, there’s one former Manly stalwart that can instil some pride into the Red V jersey.

This season marks the sixth year that ‘Mary’ McGregor has taken the reigns for St George Illawarra, but regardless of the abundance of Origin and international players on their roster, has only secured a finals spot twice.

But even with the club’s losing form over the last two months, the kicker came before their game against Penrith, when McGregor announced he’d be resting his highest-paid player in Ben Hunt for the match.

With both team’s teetering on the edge of the top eight, it was simply a must-win game. The Dragons lost 40-18.

What makes the decision even more peculiar is the fact that in less than three weeks, St George Illawarra play the lowly ranked Gold Coast Titans at home.

Plus the fact that they’ll have a fit Gareth Widdop on hand at that point, meaning you could easily rest Hunt for a week and have an international slot into the halves, instead of 30-year-old, three-game rookie Darren Nichols.

But if McGregor were to get the sack for his subpar performances, who could they possibly snag?

Enter Geoff Toovey.

The man knows how to win, and more than anything, that’s what the Red V need right now. Wins.

‘Tooves’ managed a winning record of 58% in his four-year coaching stint in the NRL, a lot better than the 48% of Paul McGregor.

Taking over in 2012, Toovey led the Sea Eagles to three consecutive top-four finishes, including a Grand Final berth in 2013. However, he was sacked by the club after finishing one win short of the top eight in 2015, one of the more shocking coach sackings in recent years.

While he spent a year in England coaching Bradford, Toovey hasn’t be sighted as an NRL head coach since his Manly sacking four years ago. The time is perfect for him to return.

With the court case of Jack de Belin and the departure of Gareth Widdop, the expectations on Toovey wouldn’t be intense.

Yet he’d be taking over a roster featuring Origin stars Corey Norman, Ben Hunt, Paul Vaughan, Tyson Frizell and Tariq Sims, as well the likes of Cameron McInnes, Zac Lomax and James Graham.

The Dragons aren’t a side that needs rebuilding, and Toovey could propel them deep into the top eight.

McGregor has been questioned for years by the Dragons’ fans, some of the most passionate in the competition, and he certainly can’t last until his contract expires in 2021.

We’ve seen glimpses of the side’s best this year, but Mary has failed to really get the most out of his side. They were known as the ‘May premiers’ for the last few years, starting the season outstanding before a drop in form has seen them either miss the finals or just scrape in.

The year that Toovey missed the finals, and was ultimately sacked for, was the season headlined by off-contract stars Kieran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans, and the drama that pursued that saga.

The fact that no club has hired him since is simply bewildering, but if the St George Illawarra side wants their club playing finals footy, it’s time for that streak to end.

Geoff Toovey is your man.
