Raiders fume at L-plate Titans

CANBERRA are angry that they are sending 11 first graders to a trial in Ipswich this weekend to play a Gold Coast side that doesn't include a single NRL player.

The Raiders agreed to play the trial last month and will field a strong side combining their NRL stars with players from their feeder club, Souths Logan.

Gold Coast has selected a team of under-20 players and others from their feeder club, Tweed Heads.

Titans coach John Cartwright said the trial was never supposed to be a full-scale hit-out.

But Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders were "disappointed" about the situation.

"We didn't have to go but filled in when Penrith withdrew. It is also disappointing for rugby league up there in Ipswich.

"We are flying up from Canberra and I would have thought Gold Coast needed their players to have a hit-out.

"(Gold Coast not picking an NRL player) is news to us. We weren't told they wouldn't be playing any of their NRL players.

"I'll be more disappointed if one of our players gets injured."

The NRL players from Canberra to play include Neville Costigan, Colin Best, Terry Campese, Michael Weyman and Michael Dobson.

Cartwright responded last night, saying: "The original trial was against the Penrith Jim Beam Cup side. They pulled out a month or so ago but we had our plans in place.

"We had already organised to play half a dozen under 20s players in the trial and others from our feeder club, Tweed Heads.

"I had promised those blokes a game. I can't just go back on my word now because Canberra send up 11 NRL players."

The Titans had a trial vs Penrith cancelled on them for this date, Canberra stepped in at the last minute.

It is a trial they realise?

The Raiders also have 2 other trials, at Orange and Mackay. What's your point? The Gold Coast's other trial is at the far-flung region of... the Gold Coast.
