trials?

I think the last trial game in Perth (Cowboys from memory) drew 12,500. Last trial game in Tassie drew 14,000. Beats me why more teams don't take trials games on the road?

All trials should be played in regional areas or 'non league' cities. I think it's a joke when the tigers play the roosters in a trial at the sfs infront of 7,000 people.

can't they come up with a better name for it? Charity Cup makes them sound like they're living off the Dragons's hard work

Plus all NRL charity games should involve souffs. Have to give them some form of charity/preseason silverware before yet another inevitable failure of a season.

Apart from the Knights hosting their own "All Stars" match where a handful of Knights first graders will verse local indigenous players, they only have one trial on Feb 22 possibly against Roosters but venue/opposition are not confirmed.

Are they reading poetry to each other?

Unfortunately trials are a necessary evil. Without a trial, the team will start round one on the back foot. The team will be less structured for the beginning of the season. It's also a good opportunity for younger players to get used to playing around the first graders. The downside of trials is that it can result in serious injuries as well as improving the chances of burnout as the season goes on.

From this article in today's Daily Telegraph -

With the Roosters set to begin their bid to become the first side to secure back-to-back premierships against arch-rivals the Rabbitohs on March 6, after their World Club Challenge clash with Wigan at Allianz Stadium on February 22

I just found the following article on nrl.com -

World Club Challenge confirmed for Aust

By James MacSmith

Rugby League's World Club Challenge is finally returning to Australia, with the NRL confirming on Monday that premiers the Sydney Roosters will meet Super League champions Wigan in the international showpiece at Allianz Stadium on February 22.

After much wrangling between interested parties in Australia and England, NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said the WCC will return to Australia next year for the first time since 1994 when Wigan defeated Brisbane 20-14 - a gap of almost 20 years.

"We have been talking with our English friends about it for a while and they were keen to have it over here and so were the Roosters and it has all come together," Greenberg told AAP.

"It has always been hard to make the financial side stack up but they are both strong brands and so the game should have great appeal. "Given the success of the Roosters last year and the fact that rugby league is very much back on the agenda after a long off-season at that time of the year, we think we can make it a success. "There should be a great appetite for the game."

Greenberg said he was hopeful the fixture could be a sellout, with Channel Nine looking at broadcasting the game, and that it could be the start of a share agreement between Australia and England, with matches alternating between the two countries each year.

"It's great to have the game back here and that is something we will certainly be open to," Greenberg said.

The match presents significant logistical and player management issues for both sides.

The start of the Super League season has been rescheduled to allow for Wigan's involvement in the WCC, which comes just a week after the Auckland Nines at which all NRL sides are expected to field a number of top-line players.

The star-studded Roosters will likely start favourites for the match, given Wigan's demanding travel schedule and the fact the visitors will be without star Warriors recruit Sam Tomkins, Wests Tigers' signing Pat Richards and Lee Mossop who has joined Parramatta.

However the match could herald former North Queensland star Matt Bowen's first game for Wigan - likewise for former South Sydney and Tigers forward Eddy Pettybourne.

The Roosters won the first WCC at the SCG in June 1976, thrashing St Helens 25-2.

I wonder if the Feb 23 trial in Dunedin will be televised again. It'd be nice to see some pre-season coverage that's not just some 1-camera highlights at the end of the sports news.

I suppose the question is, does an injury in a trial mean any less or more than an injury in Round 1 or 2??

It would probably mean a bit less as the player will have another week or two to get over the injury. On the other hand if a player gets injured when the team isn't playing for 2 points, then that is pretty hard to take.

The Warriors website article on this says "possibly"... hopefully it is. We need some more televised trials where it's financially possible.
