for comparison, rolling stones top 10, from here
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time/1

1 Jimi Hendrix
2 Duane Allman
3 BB King
4 Eric Clapton
5 Robert Johnson
6 Chuck Berry
7 Stevie Ray Vaughan
8 Ry Cooder
9 Jimmy Page
10 Keith Richards
11 Kirk Hammett

...

24 The Edge

That list isn't a lot better. Just instead of sh*t mainstream guitarists, it has mediocre classic rock guitarists. Rolling Stone has always been biased towards music from the 60s and 70s and ignored a lot of modern stuff.

You cant compare guitarists whom play pretty tame stuff, to guitarists whom solo for most of the songs or play in a band where the guitar is the centre piece.

In my opinion...

10. Heroes - David Bowie

Six minutes yes, but it's the three minute song we all remember and love. A major what the hell, considering they don't have the usual longies like Stairway To Heaven Or Bohemian Rhapsody.

9. Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
One of the few Metallica songs that always makes me sing. A good ballad.

8. Let There Be Rock - AC/DC
The Australian vote. Not a bad song, they've had better long ones though.

7. You Cant Always Get What - Rolling Stones
For some reason, Operator Please just got into my head. Not a bad track.

6. Purple Rain - Prince
Once again, I listen to the short version a lot. Never heard the long one.

5. Jesus Of Suburbia - Green Day
An absolutely awful "song". One of the most whiniest pieces of crap.

4. Evie (Part 1 2 3) - The Wrights
Good choice, but again, people only remember Part 1.

3. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd

1. November Rain - Guns N Roses
Good choices, all good songs.

I think they missed some big songs though in this one. Wont Get Fooled Again for instance.

Estranged is a better song than November Rain.

Very surprised not to see Stairway to Heaven too. Is that the only countdown in the history of the universe it hasn't made?

Whilst I agree to a point, the ending chucnk of estranged is up there as one of my fav pieces of music, NR is also a great song and certainly has its moments.

But yes, estranged is a brilliant brilliant song.

You'd think Hey Jude would have made the long song list, I think it was the first 'long' single by a pop/rock band, and they only got away with it because they were the Beatles.

Didn't know there was a 6min version of Heroes... will have to go searching. The long version of Purple Rain goes alright.

I think Telegraph Road is a better long Dire Straits song than Money For Nothing.

Needed to have Stairway to Heaven in the list. And Bohemian Rhapsody. And Bat Out of Hell as per the Melbourne list.

I think they missed some big songs though in this one. Wont Get Fooled Again for instance.
Indeed, that track is an absolute corker.

5- Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf

Can't believe I didn't think of that!! Great song!! One that people actually listen to a long version...

Good point.

I didn't like it how they put long songs, but are remembered for the single version. The 6min version of Heroes is nothing more special than the original.

The 6 minute version of Heroes is much better, it has so much more build up with the extra verses.
