Try from the play the ball?

They took it out because the markers used to push against the player playing the ball and it all got very messy. We should be trying to limit play the ball penalties.

We are seeing players penalised for a 'messy' play the ball? Where did that rule come from? If a player has more than one strike at the ball, or stumbles at all, the ref packs a scrum or blows a penalty.

Unless the player moves off the mark or doesn't use his foot I can't see what the problem is.

It was like scrum feeds, very often dubious and open to the referee's whim at the time. Players would often not face square, both when trying to play it forward and trying to rake it back. Have to say though, when executed properly, the rake back was a very neat trick.

Wasn't that Mark Laurie in 1990 at the WACA? i'm pretty sure it was...
Nope - def at Parra stadium

It was Brett Atkins, playing on the wing for the Eels, at the WACA during a 1989 pre-season game.
The dummy-half hadn't got there, so he thought he was unmarked.
Parramatta won 22-12

Was that the Panasonic Cup match against Balmain? If so, I was 8yrs old and it was the first game I ever saw live. I have the programme here somewhere (I saw it a few months ago). Both teams had awesome line-ups that day.

Yep, would have had it on tape for years, but overwritten now. Pity, it was funny stuff .. IIRC his fullback kind of held an arm out as he whizzed past in the wrong direction, that's when he knew the jig was up.
