Brad makes his ‘mark’ on Uni Shield match

SCHOOL LEAGUE: Cronulla Sharks-bound Brad Marks scored four tries and set up another in the Dubbo College Senior Campus win over Granville Boys High at Apex Oval on Wednesday night.
Marks appeared to effortlessly meander through busy traffic to find the try line from all areas of the field in the University Shield round of 16 clash.
Dubbo were expecting a tough encounter against the much bigger opposition but completely dominated the first half with decisive dummy half running.
The game plan looked simple as Marks and hooker Jeremy Brown repeatedly ran at the big forwards and within 10 minutes Marks had crossed twice for a 10-0 lead.
Midway through the half Marks made another break before being cut down, but he still managed an offload to centre Dave Nicholls who finished off the good work.

Coach Craig May sent out a stern message to his players after the game.
"I don't think we played particularly well and our second-half performance was disappointing," he said.
"Brad Marks and Jeremy Brown were the big-time players for us tonight - you take out Marks and you can see the score for yourself.
DUBBO COLLEGE 26 (Brad Marks 4, Dave Nicholls tries; Jordan Boney 2, Kurt Fuller 2 goals) def GRANVILLE BOYS HIGH 20 (Peter Tuafisio 2, Edward Lavulo, Graeme Kolomalu tries; Teni Waipouri, Nicki Tuvitu goals).

We've signed a 15 year old kid from Shellharbour too (lives in the same street as Craig Stapleton).

Currenty plays League on Saturdays, and soccer on Sundays I believe.

He's a fullback.

Blackbutt’s Ben Stratton has secured a contract with the NRL’s Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks…just over a year after taking up rugby league.

Stratton, 15, recently inked a three-year deal with the Sharks after starting his league career with their Shellharbour City namesakes halfway through the 2006 season. The accomplished soccer player played his first game of league for Warilla High before being recruited to join Shellharbour’s under 14s by coach Glen Bayo.

Fast forward to this year’s Combined High Schools (CHS) rugby league trials in Toronto, where Stratton was spotted by Cronulla assistant coach/academy manager Craig Wilson.
Wilson beat St George-Illawarra and other NRL franchises for the fullback’s signature.
Stratton said he chose the Sharks for their reputation of grooming juniors and the club’s proximity to his home. “It was just a good deal – the Sharks treat their juniors well and they are close to home,” he said.

Stratton will start training with the Sharks’ Harold Matthews Cup outfit in November before the season starts early next year. He will also be given a fitness/workout regime to do from home.
The Sharks have a policy that all contracted juniors must work or study to play football with the club.

Stratton’s parents, Ralph and Fiona, contracted player-manager Andrew Purcell to handle the rush of interest from NRL clubs. The youngster said that he wants to take his league career as far as possible. “It’s all worked out well, if I had my way I would have been playing league years ago,” Stratton said.

Pursuing an NRL career means the end of another sporting career for Stratton – he plays for Oak Flats Junior Soccer Club in a three-time state Champion of Champions team. However, after this season he will have to leave soccer behind as he chases his NRL dream. Stratton, a life-long Parramatta supporter, has made the trip to Toyota Park to meet first grade coach Ricky Stuart.

His links to the Sharks don’t end there – Sharks first grader Craig Stapleton lives in the same street. This season, Stratton represented South Coast at the CRL carnival in Cootamundra, the Southern NSW CHS team and the Illawarra Academy of Sport squad, in addition to being an elite sprinter.

Ben said he would like to thank Shellharbour City Sharks coaches Glen Bayo, Craig Baxter and Ben Fields for their help in developing his young but so far fruitful rugby league career.

Check out the surnames on the guys from Granville.
The Wok was stating a coupla years back on the lack of a lot of white guys in the junior ranks.
He said the sudden rise of NZ to become the more dominant challenger to the Kangaroos and win the Tri-Nations was a result of smaller 'Aussie' guys not gaining enough experience due to the fact many school teams, rep teams and Fleg spots are becoming increasingly filled with bigger, faster developing Islander boys.

The whiteys eventually catch up in size when they mature, but at junior level they are disadvantaged when reps are selected.

Yep its true.

When playing union at the under 15 state school boy titles all the southern teams were full of islanders. two years later at the open titles not a lot to be seen. they never develop the skills of a footballer because they are use to just running straight and forward and running over everyone else with a kiwi sidestep.
