Turvey blasts Fitzgerald
By James Hooper
May 17, 2006
FORMER Bulldogs supremo Steve Mortimer last night questioned Denis Fitzgerald's reign at Parramatta in the wake of Brian Smith's shock departure.
Blasting the decision to dump Smith as coach for 2007 before the start of this season, Mortimer pointed a finger at Fitzgerald and demanded the Eels chief executive be held accountable.
"I don't have an allegiance to Brian Smith but I think he's a great bloke and obviously a good coach," Mortimer said.
"Maybe the board should consider if Denis Fitzgerald made the right decision and maybe not just Brian Smith should be held accountable.
"The CEO must be accountable to the football club directors.
"I think it's appalling that such a decision was made before the season even started.
"I feel for Brian Smith, being an ex-player and CEO, there's no doubt it affects the morale of the team."
