Should the league do more to get PL on the ABC?

Should the league adapt the attitude of the AFL and ensure that state competitions be televised on the ABC as is done with all AFL comps and the QLD. With an opportunity the ABC would like to discuss the possibility of televising the PL should they support this or let our coverage stagnate and allow the AFL, ARU and FFA to gain a stranglehold over the minds of viewers.

Please support this poll and encourage others to post an opinion as it will be sent to the league as part of people power.

Given our game is under threat from soccer, aru and the AFL spending large somes of money in NSW and having their local comp televised it is important that the league not just say all is ok and talk the big fight.

With sponsorship getting tighter the importance of being associated with a sport is about value for money. Clubs get more exposure for their sponsors, other than Fox and the odd game on FTA which improves opportunities to build the base of financial support. Even small non NRL clubs such as Wests, Newtown, Norths, Balmain can build their financial base which only helps the NRL clubs they are involved with and juniors. TV coverage also boosts these crowds for locals and people who are on a budget and cannot always get to an NRL match.

It reduces the amount of money available to the other codes as this is a rugby league state first and foremost.

Winners,

Players with increased revenue to pay non NRL players.
Fans who support these clubs and rugby league in general.
Sponsors with more TV exposure.
regional viewers who are often starved of top football.
Clubs with increased revenue.

Losers.

AFL.
Soccer
Union

Good one, Bluebag, for taking this to a larger audience...!

This debate has been bubbling along on the NSWRL forum for a few days:

http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/showthread.php?t=149462

Clearly this should be a high priority for the NSWRL, NRL and sponsors. However, I think we need more than a poll on this forum - one of those online petitions would be appropriate?

I didnt realise you guys didnt get club footy on a Saturday arvo? What do they show in Sydney if they arent showing local footy?

In NSW the ABC shows 'NSW Premier Rugby' (which means 'Shute Shield' for the first six weeks of the season and then 'Tooheys New Cup') on Saturday afternoons. The ABC used to show a live game of Rugby League on Saturday afternoons, but the coverage was sacrificed in the peace deal between Super League and the NRL.

As part of my strategy I have written to to RLPA to seek their support for their brothers in increasing exposure and the benefits to them. I will be interested if they do support this to push the league or are they just a group for the elite.

Another way is for we the fans to contact sponsors themselves and ask them to help maximise their exposure by asking them to speak to the clubs to help promote from a board level.

Well if this youth league happens then channel 9 i think has said they will have 2 games a week of that so i think the youth league would be good for the game in general.

For anyone who doesnt know about it basically its just like instead of having nsw pl and qld cup they will have nrl sides b sides like parra will play broncos in premier league when they play in first grade.

Good idea - though the RLPA has had a rocky relationship with the NRL in the recent past (especially on media rights issues).

Which players are eligible to be members of/represented by the RLPA? Are non-NRL contracted PL players members (how many in each squad would be in this category)?

It appears the RLPA only negotiates Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) that include remuneration for the:

"full-time squad and for the next 10 players" of each club.

The proposed youth cup, ie an expensive Flegg is interesting as apart from increasing costs as these players will need to be paid more money to compensate for takingtime of work and education. How will many clubs afford it, the pokie tax in NSW, the Warriors need help and in the past the Broncos and Cowboys fielded teams in the NSWRL First division comp but withdrew due to high costs.
Airfares and accomodation are not cheaper for the youth cup so travel costs double.
However having said that about what will be a short lived and expensive comp given the leagues failure with other junior comps this thread is about the current PL on TV.

Are you happy to watch club rugby or in the near future super club rugby or even state AFL and Soccer. Keep the game alive not shrinking it.

In Brisbane we get to see one Queensland Cup game on a Saturday afternoon, I think Sydney gets club rugby at that time? I'm told that QC game is on fox later in the week?

As I don't support a QC team (don't mind Ipswich but what a joke they are!... thats fitting i guess ;-)), I would love to see PL on T.V. With the way digital T.V works I would think seeing 1 or 2 PL games a week would be easy done for god's sake fox shows Jnr league AFL games!

I've seen Queensland Cup on ABC2.
I thought that the ABC approached Foxtel and got knocked back? I seem to remember them being willing show the PL games. Although I do have a shocking memory.

Some people tell me that 9 hold the rights to PL however I am following this up with the league but given new legislation saying that networks that do not use any rights will llose them which I am clarifying with the minister for communications. 9 cannot hold exclusive rights over grounds as most are council owned and having spoken to several they would not allow this to happen as many get revenue share of ground signage and any efforts to increase this would be of benefit.

(Part of my job is to find loopholes:lol:  )
Please support this poll either way when you visit and remember this is our game they are merely managing it.

ALso I have contacted the RLPA and received a reply from Matthew Rodwell whom I sought support on behalf of members who play in this comp. He was non committal and wished me the best, making it clear that the RLPA is merely an organisation for the few elite players. But I am still working on it.

This is a no brainer. Of course it would be good for the game. Any improvement in coverage of league has to be good. I watch the Qld Cup every week which I couldn't do before they started showing it on Fox. I have an interest in the Q Cup but even if they showed the PL I'd watch it. I watched the JBC today and will continue to watch it too. THe good thing about watching the PL is you can see the next crop of first graders and for country people you can see those players from the country areas that aren't quite in the NRL. Well done Bluebag it seems you're putting in a lot of work on this issue and I wish you all the best.
