Honestly the idea of US/Russian war over this is completely hysterical

Doesn't have to involve them. I'd highly doubt the US would be party to it. It would be more likely to be a European reaction to Russia, and then if it escalated, would involve the US. There's no way the US would get involved as an instigator.

That doesn't mean there wouldn't be a conflict thought.

With all due respect, I find that to fly in the face of everything history has taught us and naive to human nature.

Dude, my point is that agenda driven heads of state cant get away with what they did 60 years ago. History does repeat a lot but it does also, on occasion, get learnt from

This flight getting shot down, while tragic, is pretty small compared to other flash points around the globe that have the potential to spark bigger conflicts

Nail on the head, JW. Only the Dutch have major cause for grievance, and given it was likely the action of a loose affiliate rather than military, it'll just be overlooked as a tragic act of terrorism.

If Russia invading the Ukraine couldn't draw more than limp wristed sanctions, guerrillas blowing up a plane won't amount to anything

Never got the too soon thing, the basis of good comedy is surprise, and making fun of recent tragedies is surprising. Nothing should be off limits.

I think it's never "too soon", but I believe it's careful ground to tread on given the sensitive nature of it. I mean, I've cracked jokes about the issues in Gaza.

The trick is not to say it to the people genuinely affected by the incident. Good starting place, anyway...

I think you give the general public too much credit and agenda-driven heads of state too little. Remember, Murdoch is the controlling force of the media at the moment.

Maybe. I'm not saying something will happen, just that it has the potential to.

So did Austria have the only air of grievance. You mistake cause and effect for justification by others.

I'm hoping and thinking nothing will come of this. I really do. But I think we're a little naive to assume this won't get misused by the wrong people.

I think it's naive of you to underestimate the deterring qualities of the prospect of mutually assured destruction. There's a reason post Hiroshima conflicts have been either 'Cold' or focused on smaller nations who are indirectly involved.

At worst, and I don't see it happening, we'll get a Gulf War or Korean War, and I don't even think we'll see that.

The only talk of World War 3 seems to be social media sensationalism from the same comment threads suggesting a boycott of Malaysian Airlines.

I think at the very worst we could see conflict on the scale of the Balkans in the early 90s

Talk of another WW is just so far from happening it will take the light from happening 1000 years to reach it

reminds me of an old, i think, d-generation skit that had 'deathometer' with the death tolls going up and it had 5 on here for a family getting wiped out in a car accident. "And flooding in Bangladesh has wiped out 500 people" and the deathometer goes up to 7. "Now remember these are our racially adjusted death tolls."

Campbell Newman going on about how we've lost x amount of Queenslanders is annoying though, cant imagine any other state separating themselves from the rest of the country. Just a horrible event.

Victoria does it without fail.

Abbott seriously needs to choose his words better about the way he is approaching Mh17. I know he's a leader, but he's treading on thin ice with this incident. The whole world is in turmoil over it.

i reckon he should just stop talking altogether

Absolutely Brilliant idea.

For the ex-leader of one of the more recognised Australian student bodies in the world and a Rhodes Scholar to boot he suffers from severe foot-in-mouth disorder.
