Lets just say Australian selectors have come to you and said that they want a team that is all under 21 with the potential to play for Australia by the time they are in their mid 20's.

The squad must consist of 10 Under 21 players with 2 players over 21 being allowed into the squad as players looking to push for Australian selection immediately.

Who would be in your team?

1. Phillip Hughes
2. Shaun Marsh
3. Mitchell Marsh
4. Moises Henriques
5. Steven Smith
6. TJ Armstrong
7. Tim Paine
8. John Hastings
9. James Faulkner
10. Josh Hazelwood
11. Mitchell Starc

12th Man James Paterson

I've picked guys with mostly first class experience.

If you have more knowledge of the younger guys, feel free to discuss.

Might make for interesting discussion regarding the future direction of the game and the Australian team.

Paine, S.Marsh, Hastings and Henriques are all over 21.

There is a fair bit of talent at Under 19 level at the moment. Tom Beaton from WA, Nic Maddinson from NSW Jason Floros from QLD and Tom Triffit from TAS all come to mind.

The Under 17's nationals are on at the moment. Very interesting to see 14 year old Harrison Kelly being picked for NSW. Left arm orthodox spinner who has managed a few wickets to date in the tournament.

Another one to watch out for is young 17 yr old opening batsmen from Penrith, Jordan Silk. Jordan was the youngest player to ever score a century on debut in First Grade last year at just 16 years old.

In last years Semi Final he hit 90 odd before being run out, against a Syd Uni attack which contained Stuart Clark.

Jordan was 12th man for Australia in this test at the SCG v Pakistan when Clinton McKay went back to the VIC squad.

Well obviously Phil Hughes (21, opening bat), Mitchell Marsh (18, fast-bowling allrounder), Steve Smith (20, spin-bowling allrounder), James Faulkner (19, left arm seamer), James Pattinson (19, express paceman) and Josh Hazlewood (18, right arm seamer) must be shoe-ins based on their performances at state level.

With Steve Smith being able to probably function as the front-line spinner in that line-up, you could probably get away with playing one more fast bowler, and in that case I would select Mitchell Starc (20, left arm seamer), who although a southpaw like Faulkner, offers more genuinely raw pace and aggression, and some firm strikes with the bat. Tom Triffitt (19, wicketkeeper) is pretty much a shoe-in, huge wraps on him. I also rate Tom Beaton (19, opening bat) as both a batsman AND a captain - never heard of Silk before though.

If you could include 2 players over the age of 21, who are very important to develop for the sake of Australian cricket and could hence benefit greatly from the experience, I would select Usman Khawaja (23, middle-order bat) as he has the talent to be next in line from Ricky Ponting, especially if George Bailey and Callum Ferguson don't really put their foot down and hit some big scores.

I would also pick, depending on the make-up of the team, Mark Cosgrove (25, middle-order bat) OR Jason Krejza (26, orthodox spinner). Both are clearly talented players, but receive little-to-no opportunity in the Australian set up at the moment, whereas players like Shaun Marsh, Cameron White, James Hopes and the recently injured Callum Ferguson get enough opportunity at the moment to show their substantial talents.

So in that case, I would either field:

Phillip Hughes
Tom Beaton
Usman Khawaja
Mark Cosgrove
Steven Smith
Mitchell Marsh
Tom Triffitt
James Faulkner
Mitchell Starc
James Pattinson
Josh Hazlewood

OR

Phillip Hughes
Tom Beaton
Usman Khawaja
Steven Smith
Mitchell Marsh
Tom Triffitt
James Faulkner
Jason Krejza
Mitchell Starc
James Pattinson
Josh Hazlewood

As you can see, the batting ability of Tom Triffitt and James Faulkner makes this a possible scenario - where you can play an extra bowler if needed, especially one of the quality of Krejza.

never heard of Silk before though.

Silky is a couple of years younger than most of the blokes mentioned in this thread, hence why you probably have never heard of him. The fact he doesn't play for one of the 'glamour' clubs in Grade Cricket is probably also a factor.

However, to be selected as the 12th man for the test that finished yesterday is a tremendous achievement and it shows that he is impressing those in important positions.

If you watched the game closely he was running water out for Siddle and Hussey. Sat next to Ponting in the change rooms which was captured by the Channel 9 cameras. He was also hugging the Australian team as they left the field. What an experience for a 17 yr old kid who dreams of being involved in Test Matches like that in a few years time.

Yeah, Jordan is a very good cricketer. Apparently the innings against Stuey Clark was amazing.

His troubles this season aroze after being in camp and getting tips off Phil Jacques. More recently, he had a chat to Greg Chappell (in an under 19's camp?)and he asked him why he had changed his stance, Jordan told Chappell about his conversation with Jacques. Chappell told him to go back to what he was doing before.

p.s. Phil Jacques has a terrible stance, even though it works for him.
