NRL CLUB TWITTER RANKINGS

UPDATED FOR ROUND 20

---

Social Media is changing the way clubs and fans interact. It has become a vital tool used by all forms of sport. The NRL has slowly adopted the idea of using tools such as Twitter to engage with club supporters.

After the release of the NRL club rankings for Round 19, there was mixed responses from people who took notice of the results. A number of digis (social media workers) from a few clubs replied in a positive nature saying it was good to see how their work is being seen. So, since Round 19 wasn’t a true reflection on the club’s Twitter performance, I have taken a look at Round 20 and ranked the clubs according.

To calculate each club’s position in the list, a score was determined in key areas such as Toyota Cup and NRL game updates, use of the official match hashtag and interaction with fans. After giving a score in each key area, the club was awarded a score out of a possible 30.

RESULTS:

At the conclusion of Round 20, one team scored an almost claimed a perfect score. The Cronulla Sharks improved their score dramatically which was mostly due to them being at Toyota Stadium. After a wonderful performance, the club received a score of 29 following big match day coverage.

ROUND 19:
FULL REPORT: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xqj7w8gvahqploa/NRLTwitterRankings.pdf

At the conclusion of Round 19, no club received a perfect score of 30. However, the top performer of the round was Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. It was no surprise that the Bulldogs topped the list with a heavy focus on social media.

Does this factor in players' interactions with fans or just the club's official twitter feed?

Ridiculous. It's like determining the most popular team based on one round of crowds. Surely form, time slot, opponent/hype, home team, tv ratings/audience, availability of cellular data at the stadium etc have a lot to do with it.

Not a surprising reaction in here to Twitter, although highly hypocritical.

I imagine there'd be a good portion of users on any online medium. I found it an interesting read although don't necessarily agree with the measures.

Funniest thing to me though is this reaction in this thread... users of one online discussion medium bagging another.

Iiiiiiiinteresting post. Needs to be digested with the biggest grain of salt available.

Over the course of the season, the Sharks would average (according to the KPI's listed in this report) a 27 on a weekly game day basis. However, this survey only accounts for a week when the Sharks had the delayed telecast and purposefully avoided live updates for the benefit of fans who (rarely) get to see a Free To Air Sharks broadcast, which was met with across the board praise amongst Sharks fans.

Congrats to the Bulldogs though. Well done! Social is ever so powerful.

The measure which I found strange was using Player's real names.

Sure looking at a Twitter handle can be a hassle if the player has chosen a shit one - but I would have thought that linking followers of the Club to their players Twitter account (if they have one) would be a positive.

Perhaps listing their real name & handle is necessary.

To be honest though, releasing a report like this based on a single round is pretty stupid. Surely they could have gone back through the previous tweets and gotten an average. For all we know, the Titans Social Media person may have been on his death bed.

This is the first round I did it. I will be looking at the twitter accounts for the rest of the season and making a comparison. You have to have starting point somewhere.

According to Twitter anything you expressed past this point is irrelevant. Of course that's if you want to compare apples and apples. Twitter isn't even remotely similar to this website, or even mainstream social media websites (FB/LI etc).

Sorry but the argument that we shouldn't criticize any social media platform because we're using an entirely different social media platform is absolutely idiotic.

Could you rank the teams in number of followers too? Would be interesting to see who has the highest fanbase, at least in the twitter using segment of the market. And how their scores or how good they are at twitter correlates with their number of followers.

As I suggested, this is the first look into the club's accounts. I agree with you in regardless to the sharks. But like I stated in my review of their account, the coverage they provided as all but perfect.
