Roots at the moment, is pretty much just doing short form Rugby competitions. Their schedule for 2024 is:

- Vegas 9s
- Santa Rosa 9s
- Saint Luica 7s
- Aspen Ruggerfest
- Hawaii 9s
- New York 7s
- Freetail 7s

One of the founders, Teena Granby, has helped setup the New York State Queens Women's team and Curtis Cunz, who was involved with the Connecticut Wildcats, is still involved with Roots.
The dead pelicans Union side, or just the union club in Santa Rosa , started off that way originally just playing in random tournaments from players in the region hoping in and out. Then that morphed into a full 15s side which then also gave birth to the DPs.

The PCRL has been getting emails from new players wanting to join current clubs and also interests to how people can start new clubs.

So in one hand the NRL did help the growth of the game, and on the other there's still so much more over the next 4 years they can do to push exposure for themselves and the game at grass roots.

SD is also going to try and get their youth program off the ground and I believe the jack rabbits or another LA team has a small group of kids they are going to try and form into a youth program of sorts.

Interesting. If RL 9s is just another opportunity for "rugby" clubs to get a few games in that could be the basis of getting people who wanted to commit further to a full RL season

Nines is definitely under utilised in the US as a way of introducing Rugby Union athletes to the sport in a low commitment manner.

Firstly, not only is it an opportunity to get traditional RU style clubs, like Chicago North Shore (a Premier USA Rugby team) testing the waters, but there are hundreds of 7s only clubs in the US, who jump around looking for short form tournaments to take part in.

In fairness to the people behind the CRL, one thing they did well to help build clubs quickly was to target some of those style clubs (like East Palo Alto & Sacramento), whilst I don't think the PCRL/USARL have the capacity to do active reach outs, at least if they can host regular 9s events to compliment the Vegas 9s, there is an opportunity to get those teams to organically reach out.

The rumours have come true, the East Palo Alto Razorbacks are back and will line up for the PCRL and USA Women's National Championship this year:

The Razorbacks joining now gives a nice 4 / 3 split between Southern and Northern California with the PCRL clubs.

So the 2024 USARL Men's National Championship is looking like this:

California:
Santa Rosa Dead Pelicans
East Palo Alto Razorbacks *
Sacramento Immortals *
Los Angeles Mongrel
Los Angeles Bandidos
West LA Jackrabbits
San Diego Barracudas

Utah:
Glendale Storm
Riverton Seagulls
Provo Broncos
Herriman Roosters

South East:
Jacksonville Axemen
Tampa Mayhem
Atlanta Rhinos
South West Florida Copperheads
South Florida Speed *

North East: (Assuming RLU does affiliate)
DC Cavalry
Boston 13s
Brooklyn Kings
Delaware Black Foxes

Outside of the main competition, Cleveland will play minimum of two matches (v Toronto & Nashville), Nashville will make their debut and the Willamette Valley Haybalers (Oregon) are hoping to lock in a match.

That list is a thing of beauty!
Its certainly not a fluke that this list coincides with the IRL reforms and NRL in Vegas.
NRL Vegas gave the 'why' and IRL reforms gave them the 'how'.
It looks like all parties are learning to work together for the greater good.

And yes, you would think that RLU does affiliate.
It then gives a great setup where the winners of each division can either:
a) play for West champs and East champs...then winner plays each other, or
B) have top team from each division meet and play in some sort of round robin/playoff series for national champs.

Big picture, would be great to see the Oregon interest result in a local NW league, along with the Texas league thats been in the pipeline for 10 years or so. Add in a mid-west league and Hawaii league, and suddenly you have eight regional/local leagues that can hopefully be sustainable! That also gives enough talent that is spread out across the country to choose some rep teams that I'd be intermixing with some high-level coaching/camps from Aus/Eng...ultimately leading the pathway to National team selection.

I'm loving these new teams popping up. Midwest Rogue Runners are the latest Women's team to form.

Need to find out where they are based (as the Midwest is huge), but really encouraging thing is the Ontario Ospreys have wasted no time organising a match up against them:

You`ve just gotta wonder how much the Vegas venture has played a part in this.
Hopefully the Vegas week being on every year will provide a chance for the different conferences to get together, network, plan and be inspired to keep up this exciting development.

Herriman Rabbitahz have announced their intention to take part in the 2024 Utah Rugby League Men's competition.

The team is associated with the Rabbitahz club that has been participating in the Utah Junior League.

The side will be the second team based out of Herriman, with the Herriman Roosters participating last year & also being part of the recent Vegas 9s.

This is fantastic news! Bernie Gurr recently did a podcast regarding RL in USA...will be a tremendous asset!

https://www.usarl.org/news/usarl-announces-appointment-of-independent-directors-to-its-board/

Jacksonville, FL, 4.6.24 – The United States Association of Rugby League (USARL) is proud to announce the appointment of two distinguished individuals, Bernie Gurr and Joe Kelly, as Independent Directors to its Board of Directors. This appointment marks a significant milestone in the USARL's ongoing efforts to enhance governance and advance the growth of rugby league in the United States.

Following an internal assessment of the newly appointed Board of Directors, a comprehensive search process began with the release of a call for applications on February 23. The USARL Board of Directors established a committee tasked with identifying top candidates with expertise in corporate governance, C suite experience, legal expertise in sports and non-profit, and a deep understanding of the sports industry, particularly rugby league.

"We had an abundance of highly qualified candidates apply for the open positions. The depth of expertise and desire to help grow rugby league demonstrated by each applicant was truly impressive and we look to continue to involve good people to support the growth of rugby league in the US, " said Matt Goschnick, member of the USARL Board of Directors and search committee member. "The appointment of Bernie and Joe to the board is a significant step forward and will greatly benefit the entire organization as their contributions will bring strong foundations and frameworks to help drive our goals forward."

Bernie Gurr, former CEO of Parramatta Eels and Sydney Roosters, and an executive for various professional companies, now residing in Orange County, CA, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the USARL Board, stating, "I am extremely pleased to have been appointed as an Independent Director of the USARL. With the recent governance changes, the USARL is well-positioned to make considerable progress on its mission to grow the game of Rugby League in the USA. I look forward to working with my fellow Directors and all stakeholders of the USARL."

Joe Kelly, CEO of Sydney Roosters since 2017, brings with him a distinguished career in sports management, having held senior executive roles with prominent organizations such as Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Chelsea Football Club. Commenting on his appointment, Kelly stated, "It is an incredible privilege to be approached and nominated by the USARL Board to join them as an Independent Director. The US rugby league market should not be underestimated and hopefully through my roles at both the Sydney Roosters and USARL, I can assist to support engagement between the two governing bodies to grow the game in the US.”

"We are pleased to welcome two gentlemen that boast expertise in areas that are the Board's primary focus," remarked Miranda Barnard, another committee member and USARL Board of Directors. "The growth of Rugby League within the United States is undeniable as the domestic season is looking to triple in annual USARL individual memberships; leveraging the knowledge of both Bernie and Joes will allow the NGB to accelerate the existing efforts."

The USARL extends its warmest congratulations and welcome to Bernie Gurr and Joe Kelly on their appointments and looks forward to their valuable contributions in advancing the mission and vision of the organization.

I don`t believe in coincidences, how much is the NRL`s Vegas venture inspiring this sudden growth spurt and new found optimism in Rugby League in North America. A lot I`d say.

Btw Wain, can you point me in the direction of that podcast by Bernie Gurr you mention at the beginning of your post.

absolutely not a coincidence in my opinion either. A few of us in this section of the forums believe that it's probably one of the most important (and hopefully lasting) benefits that have come from the Vegas venture.

They also went through a fairly lengthy but necessary governing restructure which has helped with some of the division, with the IRL still viewing the USARL as the governing body. It seems that all the separate comps/bodies are coming back under the one banner, which can only be good!

Here's the podcast:

Two great appointments, both very experienced sports administrators who have a lot of connections both in the US & Australia.

As @wain mentioned, Bernie recently joined Dustin on the RLA Podcast, leading into Vegas, and had a lot of great suggestions around what the USARL need to be looking at over the next 5 years. Great to see he'll actually be there to drive some of that forward.
