Rugby League

Stars and strife

By DEAN RITCHIE

October 22, 2004

THE American Rugby League has earmarked US-born Knights forward Clint Newton as the man to captain the Tomahawks in a one-off international against Australia in Philadelphia on December 1.

The only problem is he is serving a lengthy suspension.

Newcastle and US management officially applied to the NRL for Newton to represent the Americans.

NRL officials referred the request to judiciary chairman Greg Woods, who rejected the US application but said the match could count as part of Newton's suspension.

The Americans plan to continue lobbying the NRL and are considering lodging another application.

American National Rugby League president and former St George halfback David Niu hopes the NRL will relent on the issue for the goodwill of international football.

Newton was born in South Carolina while famous father Jack was playing golf at the 1981 US Open.

"Representing the USA is dear to Clint's heart. He holds an American passport," Niu said.

"It would be a big ask to let him play but it would be fantastic if it could happen in the best interests of rugby league.

"Our goal here is to make the next World Cup and Clint would be a leader for us."

Newton was suspended for 12 matches for striking St George Illawarra prop Ashton Sims during a round 24 match.

He missed the remaining two premiership matches. He will have two trials counted in his suspension as well as the US game – meaning Newton will now return for Newcastle in round eight next season.

"We were approached by the Knights and the American National Rugby League to allow Clint to play in the game," confirmed NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley.

"When there is a matter of discretion, it is the chairman who makes the decision because he has heard the case."

The US team will comprise several current and former NRL players, some from England and others from the local US league.

Parramatta's Matt Petersen will be on the wing for the Tomahawks. His grandfather was born in California.

Former Wests Tigers player Mark O'Halloran has agreed to line up, as has former St George Illawarra and Roosters player Shane Millard. Both currently play in England.

Former Crushers and London Broncos forward Steele Retchless will also represent the US, as will ex-Canberra centre Brandon Costin, who plays for Huddersfield.

All qualify through having a US-born grandparent.

The US is also chasing Newcastle centre George Carmont, who is American-Samoan, Castleford's John Wells and Julian O'Neill, a New Zealander who has played with Widnes and St Helens.

Roosters assistant coach John Cartwright will coach the Tomahawks, who play Australia after the current Tri-Nations tournament.

"If we can get 10,000 people to the game I would be over the moon," Niu said.

"The interest [in the US] has been incredible. A heap of Australian ex-pats want to see the match.

"It will give rugby league a real kick-along and also give the game credibility.

"We see NRL matches here every week now and get the State of Origin live.

I can understand where you are coming from Dimitri.... it's good for the game. However, if the US rugby league folk want rugby league to be considered more than just a hobby sport they have to play by the rules.

Both arguments for and against him playing are strong.

The reality is guys, he did something wrong, whether its a test an origin or a club match you have to pay for it! The saying goes "You do the crime, you do the time!". In this case Clint has to serve the time! Whether this is good for the game or not well taht is debatable! Clint should have thought of it well before he decided to elbow Ashton Sims in the jaw!

yes but if you do the crime

you should have to do the time in the right jurisdiction

nrl games should not be in the same jurisdiction as internationals

I think seeings as it is essentially an exhibition game, and honestly, Americans wouldn't have a clue about the NRL judiciary and its actions from mid August, he should be allowed to play.

so are amnrl players actually going to get a run? its a bit unfair bringing all these players in for one game just to keep the scores closer. makes the game a bit of a farce, would rather see passionate americans from the amnrl playing. if they want to select clint newton and co fair enough, but only if they commit playing for the tomahawks and not just playing for them when they miss out on kangaroo selection.

Hey, if you can play football for an emerging country and still play SOO as if the emerging country game doesnt count, then the suspension shouldnt count. They cant have it both ways.

Let him play!

(A) Does that mean Adrian Morley shouldnt be playing for GB?

(B)Although I see your point, but would it also make it unfair to lets say Adrian Lam who wasnt a superstar but just a regular player be deprived of Australian Rep Football games because he wanted to help his country of origin out by showing a few of the boys how we do it? I imagine the best of the best will be picked from the AMNRL side and the rest will be which players are eligble from around the globe.

bloody typical rugby league - it takes years to finally do some good development work, but we start shooting it down in flames before it even has a chance to happen - then we all have a chance to shake our heads and say how it isn't worth trying to do anything because things don't work out well.

It is just an exhibition game - let clint play - for gods sake.

If you let him play you open up debate with Ricketson's "10 games for a Grand Final".

He should pay the penalty here in the interests of consistency.

I disagree. Otherwise Steve Roach could've played in 1988. A suspension is a suspension.

I personally think it's a shame that the team will be loaded full of Australians. Lets face it, they are.

I think the grandparent rule is doing very little to assist league development. Even will all their newly 'acquired' players, they are going to get their arses whipped.

At least AMRL players can hold their heads up high and aim to play the best of the best (assuming that Aus wins the Tri Nations). Most of these imported players can't get a starting spot in an NRL club.

I will still watch it though. I shudder to think of the crowd perception when an 'American' player is interviewed after the game and has little or no american accent. They've been had.

I suggest you take a look at the US Rugby Union team. Full of Kiwis and Australians - they play in the US local comp, but don't have an American accent.

At least Newton was born in the US

Agreed.

If its for the benefit of American Rugby League then why not. He does hold an American passport why not let him play.

its not only the fact that he holds a passport
