not if the usa chooses professionals

By professionals, I presume you mean Australians... who through some obscure rule qualify to play for the USA.

It would defeat the purpose of it entirely.

I can see promotion of it now...

The problem with that lineup is... that it would still lose by 100.

I'm not sure what alternate reality you're living in (one, clearly, where Clint Newton never cocked his elbow and smashed Ashton Sims in the head) but the fact of the matter is that that team would put up practically no resistance anyway. The USA would be much better served with a team of the own players, not these nuffie American ring-ins like the Walker brothers.

I think it's a mute point as they will name a team drawn from the US comp.

It can't be any more damaging that Paraguay and Uraguay getting belted at the RWC. Except that this is not a test match.

It should be marketed using some of our best Aussie exports to see if the US can contain the might of the Aussie Kangaroos.

I don't care what the scoreline is, and I'm sure if the alcohol prices are right neither will the crowd. I reckon a bit of biff wouldn't go astray either, but that would be icing on the top. I'm just p1ssed that I won't get to see it on tele.

Sure, it's great for promotion and all but why the US. Why do we want the most powerful country in the world good at something we are good at. This is our sport. We don't want USA to rule it. We should play teams like Russia. Help the smaller countries out. I hate the USA.

While I don't hate the US.... i think an Oz team playing in Russia is a great idea. The US is a saturated and mature sports market. It would be great if RL can find a niche that is sustainable. It would be great if the US was able to beat Australia at RL in the distant future... it would fire us up big time.

Russia (and the ex-soviet states)..... one gets the feeling the sports market place is not as saturated as the US and we should be working on it.

Why am I a goose? I would just rather see Australia play other countries that deserve it.

This is from the Telegraph

Uncle Sam wants Newton
By Dean Ritchie
October 22, 2004

THE American Rugby League has earmarked US-born Knights forward Clint Newton as the man to captain the Tomahawks in a one-off international against Australia in Philadelphia on December 1.

The only problem is he is serving a lengthy suspension.

Newcastle and US management officially applied to the NRL for Newton to represent the Americans.

NRL officials referred the request to judiciary chairman Greg Woods, who rejected the US application but said the match could count as part of Newton's suspension.

The Americans plan to continue lobbying the NRL and are considering lodging another application.

American National Rugby League president and former St George halfback David Niu hopes the NRL will relent on the issue for the goodwill of international football.

Newton was born in South Carolina while famous father Jack was playing golf at the 1981 US Open.

"Representing the USA is dear to Clint's heart. He holds an American passport," Niu said.

"It would be a big ask to let him play but it would be fantastic if it could happen in the best interests of rugby league.

"Our goal here is to make the next World Cup and Clint would be a leader for us."

Newton was suspended for 12 matches for striking St George Illawarra prop Ashton Sims during a round 24 match.

He missed the remaining two premiership matches. He will have two trials counted in his suspension as well as the US game - meaning Newton will now return for Newcastle in round eight next season.

"We were approached by the Knights and the American National Rugby League to allow Clint to play in the game," confirmed NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley.

"When there is a matter of discretion, it is the chairman who makes the decision because he has heard the case."

The US team will comprise several current and former NRL players, some from England and others from the local US league.

Parramatta's Matt Petersen will be on the wing for the Tomahawks. His grandfather was born in California.

Former Wests Tigers player Mark O'Halloran has agreed to line up, as has former St George Illawarra and Roosters player Shane Millard. Both currently play in England.

Former Crushers and London Broncos forward Steele Retchless will also represent the US, as will ex-Canberra centre Brandon Costin, who plays for Huddersfield.

All qualify through having a US-born grandparent.

The US is also chasing Newcastle centre George Carmont, who is American-Samoan, Castleford's John Wells and Julian O'Neill, a New Zealander who has played with Widnes and St Helens.

Roosters assistant coach John Cartwright will coach the Tomahawks, who play Australia after the current Tri-Nations tournament.

"If we can get 10,000 people to the game I would be over the moon," Niu said.

"The interest [in the US] has been incredible. A heap of Australian ex-pats want to see the match.

"It will give rugby league a real kick-along and also give the game credibility.

"We see NRL matches here every week now and get the State of Origin live.

"We will also see the back-end of the Tri-Nations tournament.

"A lot of college footballers are starting to come across to rugby league."

I think its great that some of those players have been confirmed to play. I think its harsh to not let Clint Newton play because of his suspension. How does Greg Woods get to decide whether a player plays in an international match is stupid. The only thing i don't agree with is that Newton is captain, i think it should be a homegrown player because i think that would encourage more spectators and more people playing league over there.

Clint Newton will not be playing for the Tomahawks. It is not right to other players that have been suspended and the current players now if Clint would play. Dave Nui, and the entire AMNRL respect the desicion that was made.

Thier will be about 6-8 international stars playing for the Tomahawks. One of thos names coming up alot is Jules O'niel. I have spoken to Jules severel times on the phone.....and look forward to the day to meet him.

There are alot of excitting things coming up. It is going to be a great event for the entire world of Rugby League.

the nrl should have let him play

one test match to help develop league in usa is more important than a stupid domestic suspension

Clint would be their best player - it is a shame he can't play - but i believe he and joey are going over to help out with the promotion and the coaching - or that may be just a rumour.

Roopy;

Clint may be the best player. However, it will be a great day for RL whether he plays for the Tomahawks or not. All us fans must just get over Clint not being able to play. Lets talk about things that will happen.
