He’s 22. This is how most 22 year olds talk, they are purely professional and after as much as they can get, the way the world is ‘progressing’. There is almost no emotion in it at all.

Be interesting to see what the club does here, it does seem they still consider Val a long term fullback. They are probably hoping Benny is here for 2 years and Val take over the number 1 after that.

Valerie won’t cop that. It’s one or the other.

I reckon he’s more about the coin in a professional sense than an ego driven have to play fullback. It may all end up being the same thing anyway if he thinks ahead.

If cows guarantee fullback, match our offer, then he’ll go...because Val will back himself to be worth more at the end of his next deal as an established fullback.

Ahh OK. So if Slater was on bigger coin he wouldn't have made those errors.

Got it.

And re Val, how dare a player try and secure the best deal possible for himself.

What a prick he is.

The argument lies solely on the response, I'm sure Roify ia a bot.

I am going against the grain, i dont believe we can have both Barba/Holmes, that being the case i would go for holmes.

He is 7 years younger than Barba
His improvement this year has been great
Barba has had issues with NRL, he comes back gets into trouble we lose him.
Holmes is great for the marketing department as well, is huge with the kids, he could basically be our Benji Marshall in marketing and following he had with Tigers years back.

There is more to what happens on the field here for the Sharks, we have an ageing roster, Barba would have 2-3 years max, Holmes has 10, yes there is a risk involved but i do believe there is so many more benefits, and it would give stability in our spine, which then next year will really take shape.

Holmes/Moylan/Flanagan/Brailey boys

Im a fan of Val but i could handle losing him if it meant getting Barbs back.
Like ive said before anyone in this forum would look like a superhero running off Barba scoring easy tries. Holmes isnt at that level...yet.
I do hope we can have both of them and Holmes continues his apprenticeship under Barba like he was supposed to in the first place.

Sounds like Val is off anyways. Cowboys will match any offer I imagine, they'll need a boost after losing JT and not shifting Coote for Ponga.

No point having him if he wants to leave and go back to Nothing QLD. He will just do it when his contract is up and then we wouldn’t have Barba either

Val doesn't need to do an apprenticeship under anyone at FB. Yes he still has areas to improve but he's coming along nicely as it is.

Some give or take on the actual figures, but close enough to be interesting for discussion purposes (from fox and zero tackle), man, there’s big contracts out there:

List of rumoured 1million a season players

JT Cows 2013 4yrs 1.2mil
Smith Storm 2014 4yrs 1mil
DCE Manly 2015 8yrs 1.25mil
Foran Dogs 2015 4yrs 1.2mil
Hayne Titans 2016 2yrs 1.2mil
Ash T Titans 2017 3yrs 1mil
Tauma Cows 2017 10yrs 1mil
Hunt Drags 2018 6yrs 1mil
MM Cows 2018 5yrs 1mil
Pearce Knight 2018 4yrs 1mil
Milf Donks 2018 4yrs 1mil
Cronk Roots 2018 2yrs 1mil
SJ NZ 2018 2yrs 1mil
Angus Roots 2019 3yrs 1mil

Rumoured 800< 1 mill range

Moylan, Val, Slater, Turbo, Ponga, Burgess, Jennings, Tuivasa, Birdy.

I’m sure the Cowboys will break the bank for him. They’ll have Thurston’s money and they’re smarting from losing Ponga too (as a note, who thinks Ponga gets a huge contract upgrade before that 4 year deal ends??? )

Say the Cows sign him for the same terms (or less) we offer him, then it was never about the coin.

He’s a match-winner now, he will be in the future and unless you think his growth, development, skill all will stagnate from here, there’s no reason to think he won’t be better than he is currently. Barba was a bit like a fine wine, wasn’t he? Slater too? Both improved significantly through their 20s.

As a side note, I don’t begrudge any player and their manager securing the best deal for them as they prepare to sign a deal. It’s a brutal sport with a short lifespan and the potential risk for severe injuries and or a debilitating life as you age.

A players worth is only determined by the market anyway, and their own opinion of their value or worth is *irrelevant (*unless of course, you torpedo a complete season because you signed a multi-year dear for security, before a salary cap spike, and felt like you dudded yourself out of 300k a season and proceeded to snipe and moan about it less than 18months into your contract and throw away an opportunity to repeat 2016 so that you can get moved on - not that I'm salty)

I’d be devastated if we lost him. I don’t see a replacement pathway in our juniors that includes having a first grade debutant by 19 with QLD and Australian reps by 21, who hits 100 first grade games before he’s 23. And I think buying another clubs similar talent isn’t going to cost us any less than what we’d pay Val anyway.

I’m sure we have a plan b though.

He still has a lot to learn at NRL level though. Like i said, i like Val and want him in the team but if he gets the opportunity to learn from someone like Barba he will be far better off for it down the track.

I think he's coming a long brilliantly in the attack side of things. He's certainly getting more involved in backline movements, more than Duges who has been a FB for many years.

I do agree he has things to learn in defence though but there's no reason why he can't learn that aspect from Duges, who is bloody good in that area.
