Frees up a shitload of dollars, 2019 is a now transitional year though we may have competed well with Holmes it was always going to be a bit tough anyway.. Back to mediocrity.

His initial flirtation with the Cowboys and then his decision to go do this shows that he never gave two shits about this club.

He wanted out, no matter what.

He will be massively missed. Not only a super talent stil on the rise but an athlete who attracted interest across NRL and now NFL. Good luck to the kid hope he gets a crack at US footy and makes a ton of cash. Just a pity he hadn’t made the decision end of last season, we might well have Barba ready to slot in again.

Where did this info even come from.
Isn't Val on holidays overseas still?
I've never once seen a quote from the kid saying he was even homesick wanting to go home to NQ, let alone wanted to play in the NFL.

Valentine Holmes has today requested an immediate release from his contract to pursue an NFL career.

This news brings great disappointment to the Cronulla Sharks who have worked hard to re-sign Holmes to a five-year extension, which would have made him the highest paid player in the Club’s history.

While this is in no way the outcome the Club planned for, there was no option but to grant a release to Holmes.

Under the terms of the release, if Holmes is unsuccessful in the NFL and wants to return to the NRL in 2019, it will be with the Cronulla Sharks only. Valentine will not be eligible to play for any other NRL Club during 2019.

Holmes took time to acknowledge the Sharks understanding and tremendous support of his decision, whilst confirming that he would enter fresh discussions with the Sharks about his rugby league career if his pursuit of an NFL career doesn’t work out.

“I will be forever grateful to the Cronulla Sharks Football Club and the Sharks fans for the past 5 years of support, it was a special moment we all shared winning the Clubs first ever NRL Premiership.

“I understand this decision may come as a shock to many but I personally believe it’s the right time for me to challenge myself and pursue this NFL opportunity.

“Hopefully the fans can understand and support me as they have done throughout my career.”

Upon hearing Holmes plans, Cronulla Sharks Football Club CEO Barry Russell said “while disappointed by Val’s decision I acknowledge he has been outstanding for our Club and for the game of Rugby League.

“He is loved by our Club, Corporate Partners, Members and fans.

“We are incredibly saddened to see him leave our Club and exit the game of rugby league, however we wish him all the best in pursuing his NFL career and hope one day he may again wear the Sharks colours.”

i fpray to god this isn’t a ploy to get him to NQ early. This is not the way I want my idiot club to do business. I honestly think this is legit that he wants to play in the NFL, which is a f**king pipe dream.

he has f**ked you blokes over deluxe for 2019, if he goes over to the states and fails after 18months-2years, he needs to come back and repay Cronulla at least a year.

Can't play for anyone else in 19, so i can't see how it could possibly be a ploy.

It's just a gap year.

No it’s not a ploy to go to the Cowboys in 2019 because the Sharks only granted him a release that if it doesn’t work out in the NFL the only club he can come back and play for is the Sharks.

Funnily enough Holmes said if and when he comes back from NFL he wants to play for the Sharks.

I'm mostly pissed that he left with zero warning. Had he made this decision at the beginning of the year or even half way through I could accept it easier.

Did everyone see the Instagram post from his AFL mate weeks ago suggesting a code swap for Holmes? He even replied to it.That really pisses me off too
